As parents, we all know that children are meant to play and have fun. Playing brings them joy as well as new friends. Understanding the importance of kid's play time is very important for parents---playing helps the kids shape and grow up into well rounded individuals. Today, video games are all the range. Even kids as young as 5 are playing them! Many parents are worried about the age appropriateness of many games. Some parents generally assume that all computer games are appropriate for their kids, but the fact is, there are games that will do more harm than good for the children. Addicting violent and action games, in particular are a no-no. Great games for your kids should be educational, and it should teach your child for the better, such as Basic English, Math and Science and at the same time improving their Hand Eye Coordination skills. Be sure you know and screen what your children are playing.

There are loads of web sites you can find in the Internet where your children can download kid friendly video games. They may be available as a freeware, shareware, or at a minimum fee. There are great kid's games you can download, but most quality games don't come free. It is important to screen the video games before letting your children play them. There are many games that are potentially dangerous to the mental and psychological stability of your children. Many games offer free trials (usually from three to seven days). Try out the games yourself before you purchase them so you can see its suitability for your children. Moreover, download games that have colorful graphics, great sound effects, positive benefits and most importantly, educational fun.

Another aspect to consider is the web site's safety. There are circumstances where the web sites have harmful viruses, adware, inappropriate pop-up ads and other malicious software. Always do the downloading yourself. If you want your kids to choose the games they want, be with them when they do so. Responsible parenting must be exercised at all times to keep your children safe in the video and gaming world.

I'm actually worried about the fact that so many kids play too much video games. I don't think it's healthy.

I agree. Video games, and indeed all computer games are becoming a real problem, not just for kids but there is also a segment of society that is suffering from massive addiction to games like World of Warcraft. They are living in a virtual world and appear to prefer it to the real one....

I'm a fan of games like Boom Blox for kids, they are fun and teach a good deal of coordination and strategy.

But apparently kids who play games like Pokemon on gameboy develop better memories, than children who don't. With the 500 odd pokemon, it's not surprising, all with individual characteristics.
And other action games 'apparently' develop reflexes. So I think there can be some benefits, either by problem solving games, or by games which require the brain to react quickly.

But the World of Warcraft buzz does seem a bit silly. I've played that game for about 9 hours and got incredibly frustrated with it! In those 9 precious hours of my life I didn't find anything stimulation, or beneficial....

As a young-ish child, I was a big fan of all the Sim games, notably SimCity. I also spent a lot of time playing with legos. I then went on to get a degree in engineering. Often, I wonder how this childhood play influence my educational choices later on. I do agree that games need to be age appropriate, though.
