Green tea is one of the world’s most popular and most enjoyed beverages. Enjoyed primarily in Asia, it has slowly gained popularity in the West because of the health benefits associated with continuous green tea drinking habit. Many people have come to recognize its potential as a health promoter since Asians that drink green tea have longer life and are less prone to certain diseases such as cancer.
Claims such as what are mentioned above are confirmed by scientific analyses published in many credible papers yet many are still critical on the right amount which should be taken to benefit from health promoting substances. A lot of people, because of the continuous programs involving health awareness are not ignorant of the hazards associated with taking too much of the good stuff. This fact is also true with consumption of drugs, herbal medicines, supplements and beverages such as the green tea.
It is an established fact that green tea and caffeine are always interrelated. They go together because like coffee, green tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is a crystalline alkaloid which elicits effects similar to psychoactive drugs. The compound is found in beans, leaves and fruits of the plant. It is also the reason behind the bitter taste of green tea.
Caffeine alone is not alarming but when taken in large amounts, can act as a stimulant and ward off drowsiness. The caffeine content of green tea is far lower as compared to coffee. But one has to limit the daily intake of green tea because if taken in excess, the caffeine level in the body could go high. Furthermore, caffeine can cause nervousness and frequent urination. That is why one has to remember that excessive consumption of green tea and caffeine will not be beneficial to the body.
Green tea according to studies can be an agent in preventing cancer, heart diseases and helpful in improving metabolism. Some studies say that 10 green tea cups are needed to achieve the positive effects elicited by green tea. Others say that only three cups are needed and that amounts more than that are not beneficial anymore.
With this, one should be carefully observant on the effects of green tea. If abnormal effects are observed and excessive amounts have brought forth discomfort, limit the amount of green tea because green tea and caffeine when taken in excess or anything for that matter is not healthy anymore.
