Nonstick cookware has the advantage of being easy to clean. No more scrubbing for hours to get food off. In particular nonstick skillets make frying eggs and other items a cinch.
But which is the best nonstick cookware set? Non stick pans come in two forms - porcelain enamelled cookware, which has a porcelain coating over the metal that is hard-wearing and non toxic, and modern coatings like teflon, which are completely nonstick, but have been implicated in some health scares.
Luckily manufacturers have taken the trouble to correct some of the problems with nonstick cookware. For example, the KitchenAid 12 piece nonstick hard anodized cookware set, has a premium three-layer nonstick coating that is scratch-resistant, and non toxic, making it safe to cook your food in it. As a nonstick surface, it performs much better than teflon too, allowing the food to come away from it quickly. You can test it by adding some drops of water and see how they bead to get away from the surface. The three layers also mean that it is less likely to peel off while cooking.
In general the more coats of nonstick surface you have the better - more coats mean the pans are more expensive but they should last longer. In addition, you can also get eco friendly nonstick pans such as Cuisinart's ceramica surface which is used in their green gourmet line. It is ceramic based rather than petroleum based so it's great for people who want to avoid petroleum derived products in their cookware.
Nonstick cookware needs to be washed by hand to protect it - this is not really a chore given how unlikely it is for food to stick to it. You just need to soak it for a little while in soapy suds to ensure oils are removed and gently wash. To protect while cooking always use wooden spoons - even if the surface is scratch resistant, metal just does not go with nonstick pans.
If you want the old-fashioned porcelain enamelled cookware, try lodge dutch ovens or le crueset dutch ovens. Porcelain sets tend to be more expensive - but they are a tried and true nonstick surface that should last you for years.
The Health Benefits of Maple Syrup
Written by DeMerchantDid you know that besides being delicious, maple syrup is also beneficial to your body? While it may seem unhealthy to some, pouring maple syrup over your pancakes and waffles me be a good thing. There are various studies that suggest this type of syrup can be beneficial to a person’s health in many ways. Here are the reasons why you should include maple syrup in your diet.
Researchers at the University Rhode Island learned that maple syrup is rich in antioxidant compounds which help prevent certain diseases such as diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s. It is ironic that this natural sweetener can prevent a disease such as diabetes which is caused by insulin resistance. It contains phenolics which can inhibit two carbohydrate hydrolizing enzymes which are important in managing Type 2 diabetes by balancing blood sugar levels.
Maple syrup is also good for the heart. Besides acting as an antioxidant, zinc also helps slow the progression of atherosclerosis. Zinc is also important in the proper function of endothelial cells which helps prevent damage caused by LDL cholesterol on the heart. Endothelial membranes are more prone to injury if it is low in zinc. If you are not familiar with these terms (and most of you probably are not unless you are well-versed in medicine), endothelium is the inner lining of blood vessels. The study also suggested that individuals who are deficient in manganese will benefit from maple syrup as it is rich in the said mineral. Lack of manganese can lower the level of HDL or “good” cholesterol in the body.
One of the reasons why maple syrup is good for you is because it is rich in essential nutrients such as zinc, iron, calcium and potassium. Zinc and manganese are known to be important in having a strong immune system. There are many types of immune cells that depend on zinc to function properly. This is true particularly for kids. There are various studies which reveal that deficiency in zinc can have an effect on an individual’s immunity and this includes the number of white blood cells. The study showed that zinc supplementation helps in getting the immune system’s condition back to normal. Besides protecting you from colds and viruses, zinc is also good for the reproductive health. Manganese on the other hand helps the body reduce inflammation, promote healing and is an immunostimulant.
Maple syrup has a lot of benefits particularly for men. Because zinc is more concentrated in the prostate than in any other human tissue, low levels of zinc in the prostate can increase a man’s risk for cancer. The mineral is considered as important not only in preventing prostate cancer but also in treating it. Zinc is used by medical experts to reduce the size of the prostate. When it comes to a man’s reproductive health, manganese can be beneficial as it is involved in the production of sex hormones.
If you have problems with your digestion, you may want to increase your consumption of maple syrup. This is because it settles digestion issues and helps people have regular bowel movement. You should consider replacing the sugar in your food and baking recipes with maple syrup. You will notice that the usual gas and bloating you experience after consuming processed sweeteners will be reduced. When you replace sugar with maple syrup, you should reduce the amount in the recipe by about half a cup as the syrup is much sweeter than sugar. It is also ideal to use pure maple syrup which you can buy from different food or health stores in your area or online.
What are Handheld Blenders?
Written by DeMerchantHandheld blenders are considered as one of the most useful items to have in the kitchen. It is also referred to as immersion, stick or wand blender. It is an appliance that is used in small food processing jobs. One of the reasons why many consumers prefer to have a handheld blender in their kitchen is because you can use it in any container or bowl and directly on saucepans when you are pureeing soups or sauces and these are something that countertop blenders are not able to do. Here some of the other features that make handheld blenders a favorite among many consumers and industry experts.
A handheld blender has a stainless steel blade making it efficient in doing various blending, pureeing, frothing and smoothing work. It runs on a powerful motor that has one-touch controls making it easier to use. The features that handheld blenders have differ depending on its brand and model. However, many people prefer to have one that has variable speeds as this is quite helpful depending on what is necessary for your recipe.
Blenders that are handheld are either corded or cordless. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages and it usually comes down to personal preference. There are different sizes as well so you should buy an immersion blender that you are most comfortable using. Depending on the brand and model that you choose, its price may vary. The more features it has, the more expensive it will be. Hand blenders come in different design as well so choose one that would suit your kitchen.
Handheld blenders are most often used to puree soups and sauces. It usually involves having soft, cooked vegetables sauce pans which have to be pureed. One of the reasons why many consumers prefer to use hand blenders in this kind of cooking technique is because it eliminates the process in which you will have to transfer batches of the food in your countertop blender. You can directly use your immersion blender in the pot, push the power button and move it around in a stirring motion. This will definitely save you time aside from making it easier for you. Hand blenders are also ideal for making smoothies and frothing milk.
The American Weigh ONYX Slim Design Kitchen Scale is a popular new style of kitchen scale that is finding a home in many kitchens. In a market bursting with dozens of different varieties of scales in all shapes and sizes, there are a few reasons why people choose the ONYX Slim scale over its competitors. When shopping for a new food scale, you may want to consider the following benefits that set the ONYX scale apart from the competition.
The most visible apparent benefit of the ONYX Slim food scale is the wide range of available colors. This is going to be a fairly superficial consideration for some of us, but most of us still want a tool to not only work well, but also be pretty. American Weigh has you covered, and offers their kitchen scales in a wide range of hues, including everything from blue to black to lime green. You can even find pink kitchen scales if you are willing to do a bit of looking.
The sleek, modern design with its clean lines makes it a great addition to any kitchens that employ a similar aesthetic. Rather than having a raised base upon which you place your bowl or item to be weighed, ONYX food scales are made up of a single layer. The weighing plate takes up most of the surface area with a large, easy to read display at the bottom. The thin, rectangular design also allows it to be easily stored, either in a drawer or on a shelf.
Rather than a traditional plastic food scale, the single sheet that makes up this scale is made of tempered glass. The replacement of any raised buttons with heat-sensitive buttons leaves a single, smooth working surface. In the event of spills that would have the potential to damage or destroy a traditional food scale, this can be a godsend because the single layer of tempered glass is far easier to clean than any other scale you may come across.
Unlike most food scales, which use AA or AAA batteries for power, the ONYX Slim kitchen scale uses dual lithium ion batteries. These powerful batteries will give you an extra long life. This means that the constant changing of batteries that you may have had to endure in the past is going to be a thing of the past.
Finally, we have to consider the warranty. Unlike many of its competitors, which only offer a one year warranty, American Weigh has taken a large step forward in this regard. Instead of one year, they are so confident in their product that they offer a ten year warranty. This guarantees that you are going to get your money's worth, and any problems that may come up will be taken care of.
If you're planning on getting a new blender, then I have a suggestion for you. The Euro Pro Ninja Master Prep.
You may have seen the infomercial, and if you watched it, then you have a good idea of the capabilities of this blender. When I saw it, I decided that it might make a great addition to my kitchen appliance collection. Especially in light of my new interest in healthier eating. I was not disappointed either.
For Healthy Eating
As you may or may not know, green smoothies are the rage in the healthy eating scene. And with good reason. All the research is now showing that raw foods are the way to supply your body with the highest quality nutrition. Basically, the China Study has shown that meat, while tasting good, is not a healthy addition to the human diet. In essence, meat in the diet leads to cancer and heart disease. Not everyone is willing to give up meat (including me...at least not entirely. I have cut down significantly.) With this information in mind I set out to find healthier ways of eating, and found out about the “raw movement.” That's where the Ninja Master Prep comes in.
Nutritionally speaking, the best foods that you can eat are leafy green vegetables. No, not iceberg lettuce. Although Romaine is a pretty good choice. I am talking about Kale, Collared Greens and Mustard Greens. If I asked you which food has the most protein per calorie, steak, or collared greens, which would you pick? Yes, this is a trick question. Surprisingly, the answer is collared greens. Note that I said “per calorie”, not “per pound”. But that answer is the reason I love the Ninja Master Prep so much. In just seconds I can combine greens and beans (another of the super foods) along with some blueberries (yes, another nutrition powerhouse) into a green smoothie that is not only tasty, but is like taking a super vitamin pill.
For Fun Food
Just so you won't get the idea that that;s all it's good for, this blender makes a great snow cone too. You want some chopped up ice; chopped up so fine, that it's like snow, then this is your machine. Not to mention the Margaritas you can make with this thing.
Or salsa. Do you like salsa. Throw a few fresh tomatoes, peppers, and onion pieces in and then just pulse it a couple of times. Done! Fresh, healthy, good tasting salsa.
The Blender That Does It All
I have used to make smoothies, snow cones, drinks, salsa, and even some amazing soups. I use this blender more than any other kitchen appliance. Even more than my microwave oven. It's that useful. So if you think you might be in the market for new blender, the you really have to check out the Ninja Master Prep blender. The best blender I have ever used.
As such, the best sources of maple syrup still come from the sap of black, red, silver and sugar maple trees. It is said that the black maple and sugar maple trees contain saps with the highest sugar content, which makes their syrup of a higher grade than the others. You can actually tell by visual inspection which ones are those of higher quality. Syrups that are usually lighter and clearer in coloration are the most favored ones because these can be poured directly on cooked dishes or drinks as a sweetening agent. Their flavor and aroma are also very robust, and their consistency is very liquid. In fact, the highest grade ones are just slightly shades darker than pure honey. However, that does not mean that lower grade maple syrup products are useless. Because of their darker color and higher heating rate, these are better suited for cooking and baking. Lower grade syrup does not burn as quickly as its light colored counterpart; and its flavor is best released after an extensive cooking time.
Unfortunately, imitation syrups are now flooding the markets. These may be cheaper alternatives to the real deal, but many of these contain very little or no maple sap at all. Products like maple-flavored syrup, pancake syrup, table syrup, and waffle syrup contain fructose corn syrup or candy syrup and fenugreek seed. These may taste somewhat similar to real maple syrup, but their liquid consistencies are very thick which is not really useful if you are using these as topping for breads and soft pastries. In many cases, imitation syrups are not recommended for baking because these easily burn at high temperatures, or during prolonged baking periods. There is also very little nutritional value to be gained from fructose corn syrup. Studies show that its high sugar content can be detrimental to one’s health. The best thing that can be said for these imitation products is that they can be bought very inexpensively; but these are certainly no substitute for the real and high grade maple syrup products.
How to Choose a BBQ Grill
Written by janet
BBQ grills come in a wide variety of styles, fuels and prices from very cheap, disposable BBQ's to expensive, state of the art BBQ grills cosing more than $2000. Which one of this myriad of choices is right for you? We've gathered together some information on the different types of BBQ grills available so that you can make an informed decision and choose the right one the first time.
Charcoal BBQ Grills
These are, of course the traditional type of BBQ grill and many people prefer them for the ambiance they lend to any occasion. They are usually the cheapest type as they are little more than a fireproof bowl, a rack for the food and vents to control the air flow. The biggest disadvantage of charcoal grills for many people is that they are not so easy to light as the other types of grills. However many people find lighting the charcoal part of the fun! Nowadays easy lighting charcoal is available to make lighting much easier. You will also have to light your charcoal BBQ ahead of time as the charcoal needs to be allowed to become glowing red before you can start to cook on it. Charcoal grills can also be messy to clean and will need the ashes removed regularly. They do give a wonderful flavor to the food and they are usually small enough to be cleaned and put away easily.
Propane BBQ Grills
Propane grills are the choice of many as they are easy to light and vary in size from fairly small to large, sophisticated grills with working surfaces and extra burners. They are easy to light , quick to set up and cook your food and, unlike charcoal grills, you do not have to wait for them to be ready. You will need to provide a propane gas bottle and replace it regularly. They vary considerably in price from under $100 to many thousands!
Natural Gas BBQ Grills
These types of grills are designed to be attached to the natural gas supply in your home and are often large and sophisticated. They are easy to light and control the temperature and cook food very quickly. Costs start at around $200 up to around $3000. They are very convenient and easy to use but are large so will usually need to be left outside, preferably covered and out of the weather.
What should you consider when buying a BBQ grill?
Obviously the cost of the grill is going to be important but take into account how long it is likely to last you, with proper care, as a cheaper BBQ may not be economical in the long run. Charcoal grills are cheap but cost more to run than gas grills so if you plan to use the BBQ a lot it may not be so cost effective. Charcoal grills are thought by many people to give the best 'authentic BBQ' flavor. If you will be cooking food for a large number of people you will want one with multiple burners that cooks food quickly so a propane or natural gas grill would be a better choice.
How much room do you have to store the grill. Some of the gas grills can be very large and will probably have to be left outside, preferably in a covered space. If you want to be able to store away the grill you will need a charcoal BBQ grill or one of the smaller gas grills.

BBQ Grill Cleaning Tips
Written by janet
Once you have purchased a barbecue grill you will want it to last for many years. You need to know how to look after it properly so that it does not become corroded and unusable so it is important that you know about BBQ grill cleaning and care. BBQ grills vary considerably in price from cheap, disposable grills for a few dollars to sophisticated gas or electric grills at more than $2000. This can be a considerable investement so you will want to take care of the grill properly. We've put together information to help you maintain and clean your BBQ grill.
One of the most important points is to ensure you clean it every time you use it. Not only is this important to prevent rusting but also to ensure your health. Most grills can be cleaned in the same way as outlined below.
What do you need for BBQ grill cleaning?
- Steel wool pads
- Grill brush made from brass wire
- Dish soap (mild)
- Spray type cooking oil
- Foil
- Baking soda (dry)
Cleaning the BBQ Grill
You should make sure the BBQ grill is completely cold before you start to clean. The first step is to use the wire brush and remove any food on all the surfaces. Do this every time you use the grill as built up food will be harder to remove.
Baking soda can be used to rub down and parts that you cannot use the wire brush on such as knobs and handles. This will help to remove any left over food and stains and will also give your BBQ grill a shine. Aluminium foil is also good for removing the last traces of debris by gently rubbing surfaces with the foil.
Nest clean the racks with the wire brush then wash with dish soap. The steel wool can be used for any stubborn baked on food. Rinse off carefully before returning the racks to the grill.
Finally spray the surfaces with the spray cooking oil to prevent rusting. Never do this unless the BBQ is completely cold as spraying oil on a hot surface is dangerous.
