Orange chicken is one of those cooking recipes that are hard top imagine before you actually taste them. In Asia, this rule may not be valid, as Asian cuisine includes surprising associations of fruits and vegetables or meat, sweet and sour mixtures that aren’t encountered on other continents.
Lately, with the Chinese culture quickly spreading across the globe, orange chicken became a common meal in many American fast food restaurants. This variety of the recipe consists of pieces of chicken battered and fried, covered in a sweet orange sauce with chili. The sauce forms a glaze on the fried chicken pieces, which gives them a special flavor. It's a good food, even if some nutritionists may argue that we shouldn't eat so many deep-freid things if we want to stay fit and healthy.
However, the Chinese traditional orange chicken is a bit more elaborated: the chicken is deep fried in the first stage of the cooking process, then it’s stir fried in a soy sauce with small pieces of dried orange peel. Bread is not popular in China, but the orange chicken dish is often served with baby carrots or with other vegetables, and of course, with the traditional rice.
If you want to prepare orange chicken at home, this is what you’re going to need for a 4 persons meal:
- 2 big chicken breasts (boneless and skinless)
- 5-6 spoonfuls of white flour 2 eggs
- Olive oil - half bottle
- A small glass (for tequila) of orange juice
- Green onions (one, two or none, if you don’t like it)
- Minced garlic (just a little bit, for a hint of taste)
- 2 spoonfuls of soy sauce
- One teaspoonful of brown sugar (or white, if you don’t have brown)
- Some chili, salt and pepper, according to your taste
How to cook the orange chicken:
Cut the chicken breasts in four pieces each, trying to make them as even as you can. Mix together the flour, the salt and the pepper. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, then dip the chicken pieces inside it. Put the olive oil in a deep fryer or in a wok, heat it, then take the chicken pieces out of the egg mixture one by one, and let them deep fry until they are done.
Meanwhile, don’t just sit there and watch TV, because you need to make the sauce which gives the name of the recipe - it's orange chicken, remember? So far, we haven't used any oranges, so time has come to do it. Put about two cups of water in a saucepan, add the orange juice, the sugar, the garlic and the onion (hopefully, you’ve chopped the onion in small pieces before this step). Stir continuously until you bring the sauce to boil, then when it starts to thicken, you can take it off the fire and pour it over the chicken pieces (which you’ve already taken out of the wok, have you?), together with some more fresh green onions cut small and with some chili (not too much, or you'll pay a fortune for the drinks).
Now take a shower because you smell like a kitchen, then enjoy your orange chicken together with your friends.
