Acne is a distressing condition for many teenagers and young adults. The good news is that for most people it clears up by their early twenties although for some people it can last into the late twenties and even the thirties. Although there are many over the counter acne treatments many people would like to know how to treat acne naturally. For those with severe acne or cystic acne a dermatologist should be consulted but if you have the occasional pimple or mild acne, natural ingredients, most of which you will already have in your kitchen, can be very effective.

Apple cider vinegar

This is very effective at killing the acne causing bacteria, removing excess oil and adjusting the skin's pH. Only use diluted vinegar (one part vinegar to ten parts water) and apply to the affected area. Leave for about ten minutes than wash off with warm water.

Use oatmeal to remove the oil

Cooked oatmeal is excellent for absorbing excess oil on your face. Cook some as usual, allow to cool then use as a face mask. leave on for about fifteen minutes then wash off with warm water and gently dry.

Tea tree oil is a good bactericide

Tea tree oil has been shown to be as effective as benzoyl peroxide at treating acne. It has been used for hundreds of years to treat wounds and has less side effects than most commercial acne treatments. It should be diluted with water (one part tea tree oil to nine parts water) and applied to the affected areas. You can also buy tea tree oil in gel form to treat your acne. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has been used for many years for wound treatments and to prevent scarring. It is an effective natural treatment for acne. You can grow an aloe vera plant in your home or outdoors if you live in a warm climate and use the gel straight from the plant. The skin of the plant can be crushed and used as a cleanser. Alternatively you can buy aloe vera but be careful to buy gel that is pure as many preparations that are sold contain other ingredients and chemicals. Apply the gel to the affected area after cleansing.

Lemon juice

Lemon juice is a good treatment for acne as it is a good bactericide and also contains citric acid which is effective at cleaning the pores. Lemon juice can sting a little so apply a small amount and dilute it with water if stinging occurs.

Conclusion

If you have mild acne it may be a good idea to try some of these natural remedies before using harsher treatments. They are not cures for acne but can have a positive affect on the appearance of your skin and help to diminish redness and minimise outbreaks. Don't expect overnight results but used over a few weeks you should see an improvement in the condition of your skin.
