Many people love to wear birthstone jewelry with the gem appropriate for their birthday. it makes the wearer feel special and is a wonderful, thoughtful gift for a loved one. There is a long history of gems giving special powers to their wearers and, although today we realise these are just colorful myths it is interesting to see how our ancestors regarded gems and the powers they believed they held.

Origins of the Birthstone Tradition

The color of the gems was originally used to assign meanings and powers and were related to the signs of the Zodiac. Only later were gems associated with the months of the year and different gems have been assigned to the months over the years. Today most people use the scheme proposed in 1912 by Association of Jewelers in America which includes some precious stones plus some less expensive alternatives. In December 2002 the American Gem association added Tanzanite to the list as an alternative birthstone for December.

Other schemes include the Ayurvedic originating in Indian philosophy and said to be dated back to 1500 BC, and the mystical scheme originating in Tibet more than 1000 years ago. However the most commonly used scheme continues to be that put forward by the Association of Jewelers. With different schemes to choose from and alternative birthstones within the scheme there is sure to be a gem that you will like whatever your birth month!

Security AlarmsFor both homeowners and businesses alike, the need to protect buildings and property from burglary and theft has never been higher. While few would argue that people should spend their time worrying about potential danger to their families or their property, fewer still would deny that the threat is real. To counter it, it is incumbent upon every person to plan for their own security. Fortunately, there is no shortage of available security options designed to meet almost any level of security threat. One of the most common of these options involves the use of security alarms.

Like other security measures, security alarms are by no means a foolproof method for eliminating the potential for burglary or other crimes. They are, however, one of the most effective ways in which a majority of home and business invasions can be prevented. They serve as a deterrent from the so-called “opportunity criminals” – those who burglarize the most vulnerable locations. The fact is that just having your home or business protected by security alarms – and posting a sign that loudly proclaims the alarms’ presence – will cause all but the most serious of criminals to look elsewhere for easier prey.

The best security alarms protect buildings, property, and people from not only the threat of burglars and others who would do you harm, but from fires and various toxins as well. The protection provided by alarm systems not only provides peace of mind, but is also beneficial from an economic standpoint that goes well beyond the safeguarding of your property. Many insurance companies offer significant premium discounts for homes and buildings that are protected by security alarms. In many cases, the insurance savings alone cover much of the cost associated with maintaining the system!

When choosing security alarms, it is important that you research the systems and the companies that provide and monitor them. Some of the smaller security companies offer what seem to be secure guarantees, but what they can do on a case-by-case basis may differ greatly from what they would be capable of in the midst of a major disaster or state of upheaval. For that reason, selecting a provider that offers monitoring redundancies and back-up stations is important. After all, natural and man-made disasters are more than capable of overwhelming a single monitoring station.

You also need to look at the level of security that you need. Do you merely want alarms that sound when someone attempts to force entry into the building, or do you want exterior lights, video surveillance, and other security measures as well? While these added features can greatly enhance the security of alarm systems, they also significantly increase the cost as well.

In addition, security alarms can also include motion detectors, smoke detectors, and various levels of monitoring and reporting. With all of the many features and options available, it is important that you not only research the type of system that you need, but that you ensure that you are adequately trained as to how the system works after it is installed. Only then can you go to sleep each night secure that you have done everything you can to protect your most precious belongings and loved ones.
