Cat litter boxes may not seem too difficult to choose, but if we take a closer look, we can see it’s not that easy, as the litter tray has to be approved by your cat in the first place, otherwise it’s useless. As diversification is one of today’s society features, several types of litter boxes have been invented, from the simple trays you have to scoop in once a day, to the automatic litter boxes that clean themselves immediately after they’ve been used. Cats come in many sizes and shapes. Similarly, an extra large cat litter box won't be the same as a box for kittens. Decorative or not, electric or not, enclosed or open, a cat litter box is a must-have, unless you think to toilet train your cat.

Tips for choosing the best litter box for your cat

These tips are mostly useful for those of you who aren’t owned by a cat yet, but will soon be. You have to be prepared by the time your new cat arrives home, so this is what you need to consider when buying the litter box:

  • Size matters: if you’re going to bring home a small kitten, buy a small tray to start with, so the cat can easily jump in and out. As the kitten grows, you’ll have to replace the tray with a bigger one, if you don’t want your home to become a sandy beach. This is why there’s no point in spending too much money initially. Just go and buy the cheapest tray available, since it’s going to become useless in a matter of months.
  • Shall it be a tray or a box? If the cat has already been used with trays, getting her to poo inside a box may prove complicated if not impossible. If you’re curious to do some research, you’ll see lots of claims that litter boxes are better than trays because they feature filters that absorb unpleasant odors. Actually, those filters are inefficient: when the cat does her needs inside an enclosed space, it’s going to stink for much longer time than in case of open trays. Moreover, the cat may not be comfortable with the box height and find it difficult to set herself in the desired position. My Russian Blue cat had this issue when I though it was a cool idea to buy her a litter box instead of the common trays she’s been using until that point: because the box lid was too low, she never defecated completely. By watching the cat closely over a few days, you can see whether she’s comfortable with the box or not. This is the best test: once a day, remove the lid from the box and wait to see what the cat does. If she immediately goes in and makes more than usual, it’s a sign that she’s not comfortable with the lid, therefore you should permanently remove it.
  • Automatic cat litter boxes can ease your life. These devices are really cool: they look very much like human flushing toilets, but they are smaller and they come with motion sensors that detect the cat’s presence inside, so they don’t start flushing to scary the hell out of a cat in need. They can be programmed to start the cleaning cycle at a certain number of seconds or minutes after the cat has left the place. They need to be plugged to the power source and to water supply and evacuation systems, then all you have to do is change a filter every month or so. As automatic cat litter boxes work unattended, you can leave your cat at home, let’s say for a week, without needing anybody to come and check on her. Personally, I wouldn’t do that, because I’m afraid of short-circuits or malfunctions that may occur, which could result in disasters. I don’t care too much about the house, as I’ve got insurance for it, but I’d have a hard time living with the thought that I’ve killed my cat with a toilet.
  • Last but also important is the budget you have available. Automatic boxes are like $600-$700, plus you may have to pay a plumber to plug it to the water circuit, if you don’t know how to do it yourself. Regular litter boxes are much cheaper – you can get a big one for as little as $30. For a little extra money, you can get a scoop free box, which has a covered waste trap that locks in the residues, thus preventing the odor from spreading inside the room. The dirt goes into a disposable tray which needs to be changed every few weeks. It’s going to cost you a bit more than the usual litter packs, but overall, it will ease your task of caring after your cats.

Whatever you decide, always keep in mind that the cat might reject everything that's new and not as she's got used to know it from before. Cats are sensitive to changes and a well-behaving cat won't get your floors dirty, even with the risk of suffering from intestinal occlusion, so keep an eye on her for a few days after implementing any change in her toilet habits and litter-related stuff.

Russian Blue is my favorite cat breed of all. This article is for all cat lovers who want to get themselves a fury friend but still hesitate on the breed choice.

Russian Blue Kittens

Russian Blue newborn kittens

Russian Blue kitten

Russian Blue kittens have something special: they have a different look from adult cats: their eyes are blue, not green, with an oval, funny shape which makes the little cute things simply adorable. As they grow up, their face starts to change, and when they are about three months of age they already look like their parents. However, the transformation is not complete: their fur isn't uniform gray yet: it has dark stripes which will fade over the following months.

Russian Blue 3 months kittens

By the age of three months, kittens look already like the two cuties in the photo above. The breed shows sexual dimorphism: female cats are smaller, while males are bigger, longer and more athletic.

The Russian Blues' ears are fantastic: they are covered with very fine, small hairs, which make them appear transparent when you look at them into the light. It's amazing how visible all those tiny blood vessels are and how delicate the "material" of the ears seems to be. They look so fragile, that I always hesitate to touch my kitty's ears.

The paws are dark brown, small and delicate. Occasionally, your blue cat may allow you to give her a paw massage - it's very relaxing for both parties. This is how you can convince the kitty that cutting her nails is a good thing. You have to trim her claws weekly if you want to enjoy your playing sessions to the full, without human blood spread on the floors.

Russian Blue's Personality

If you imagined a cat that would sit in your lap for hours, begging for petting, you couldn't have been more wrong. Don't get yourself a Russian Blue, or you'll regret it. This cat is always alert, she wants to play, she needs amusement, she breathes entertainment. No matter how big your house may be, it's not big enough for the young Russian Blue cat who's in the mood for playing. Also be informed that kittens go in the playing mood about six-seven times a day (nights included), while adult cats do it three-four times a day only (again, nights are included).

Russian Blue cat jumping

That's my kitty in the photo: did you think I was joking maybe? It's really a cat, not a big, gray spider. It's true that she was about 6-7 months old when she did those jumping tricks - now she's three years old and two kilos fatter, so she doesn't dare doing that anymore. Yet, she now has other tricks more suitable for her age. As you can see, she's got a fascination for keyboards (and for my purses, but that you won't see, because I can't just take photos while she's scratching my Mango purse).

Russian Blue cat sleeping on keyboard

If you're thinking of training a Russian Blue, you should rather see yourself in one year's time speaking "kittish" - she's the master in training humans. I tried clicker training and she ignored the treats after only two days of clicking and feeding the beast. I tried leash training: it took me about two weeks to convince her that she will survive with her leash on. There were lots of funny moments, but I was too scared to take photos - I thought she'd get strangled with that leash while jumping around all over the place, hoping to get rid of it. When I tried to give her a bath, I bet my neighbors on 6-7 floors hated me deeply. It's enough to say that I don't dare to wash my cat ever since that day. As long as she doesn't stink, I don't mind it.

But on the other hand, if you want a pal always ready to play with you, always watching you, following you throughout all rooms, if you want somebody to be happy and jump to kiss you each time you come home, then the Russian Blue is just perfect (or maybe purrrfect). She can even send unfinished email - there's no need for special training to make her do that. And if you want to put her skills to test, just leave her alone with a toilet paper roll and see what comes out. I did it:

In terms of grooming, Russian Blues don't need special attention, as they are short haired cats. Just brush them once or twice a week to minimize the amount of hair they swallow and that's all. I'm going to share some more tricks with you such as how to give your cat a pill or how to teach her a few words, but these are topics for future articles.

Breeding livebearers in your tropical fish tank is very easy. Guppies and Swordtails are very popular tropical fish for beginners and easy to breed. They are both livebearers, that is they do not lay eggs but bear their young live. From conception to birth can be between twenty and forty days with an average of 28 days. If you have both make and female livebearers in your tank they will inevitably mate and produce young as long as they are healthy and the conditions in the tank are good. You can tell if a female guppy is pregnant by the appearance of a 'gravid spot' on her abdomen. This is a dark mark shaped like a triangle that appears close to her anal vent and darkens and enlarges over the course of the pregnancy.

Taking Care of the Young

To prevent the fry from being eaten when they are born you will need to provide a breeder box with a v shaped vent to allow the fry to be separated from the mother immediately after birth. The box can be placed in your main tank and the mother placed in it when birth appears imminent. You can also add some breeding grass to the tank in case birth occurs before you have managed to separate the mother and provides somewhere for the young fry to hide.

Feeding the Fry

The fry can be fed with the same flake food as the adults but crush it first into a fine powder. If possible using live food in the form of tiny brine shrimp is also a good idea although most people cannot provide this regularly. Any left over food should be removed from the bottom of the breeder box before it begins to decay by siphoning out with a piece of tubing. Make sure you do not siphon up any of the tiny fry!

Looking After the Fry

It is a good idea to perform partial water changes at least weekly while you have baby fish in your tank. The fish will be big enough for their own tank in a few weeks or can be kept in the main tank provided you have a divider as they are still too small to be mixed with adult fish. Only after about 8 weeks are they big enough to safely mix with your adult fish unless you have very large fish in the tank. In this case you would probably be best to wait longer.

Conclusion

Breeding livebearers, especially guppies and swordtails, is very easy provided you provide a healthy environment and know how to look after the tiny fry until they are big enough to fend for themselves.

Once you've purchased your fish tank, filter, pump, decorations and any other accessories and set up the tank it is time to prepare it for your fish by 'cycling it'. What this means is that you need to provide an environment for the bacteria that will keep your tank free of toxic chemicals to grow. Nitrifying bacteria convert toxic ammonia that is excreted by the fish into, firstly nitrites which are also toxic, and then into the much less toxic nitrates.

There are two ways to do this, one is to introduce some hardy fish into the tank which can survive the higher levels of these toxic chemicals until the bacteria grow enough to deal with them. The second way, which is more humane as it does not involve using fish, is called fishless cycling. In this method a culture of bacteria is introduced and ammonia is used to encourage them to grow.

Ammonia is very toxic to fish and can cause damage to their gills. If you use fish to cycle your tank, even though they do survive, they will be damaged and much weaker. We recommend that you use a fishless cycling method which is very easy to do and only introduce fish in the tank once the levels of toxic chemicals fall to zero.

Fishless Cycling Method

The Bacteria Culture

The first thing you need to do is to obtain a culture of nitrifying bacteria. If you have a friend with a fish tank you can take some of the gravel, filter material or even a piece of rock or decoration from their tank which will be loaded with these bacteria. Failing that bacteria cultures such as Hagen’s Cycle (TM) Cycle or StressZyme can be bought in the pet shop. You can then introduce this culture into your tank.

Sources of Ammonia

Now you will need to introduce some ammonia into the tank. You should obtain household ammonia that is 100% pure and free of any perfumes or other additives. If you cannot find ammonia like this in the local supermarket your local pet shop may sell it. If you know a science teacher or someone who works in a lab this could be another source.

The Tank's Temperature

The temperature of the tank needs to be ideal for growth of the nitrifying bacteria and should be between 85 and 95 Fahrenheit (30 to 35 centigrade). Once the tank is cycled the temperature can be reduced to a level that is more suitable for your fish.

Cycling the Tank

Make sure you have plenty of aeration in your tank and also through your filter as bacteria need oxygen to grow. Add your bacteria culture to the tank and then add a small teaspoon of ammonia to a small tank, one and 1/2 teaspoons to a medium tank and 2 teaspoons to a larger tank. After about an hour test the water for ammonia which should be somewhere between 3 and 5 ppm. If it is lower than this add some more ammonia, leave for another hour, then test again. Once the level is correct you can leave the tank for a few days. Now you will need to test the water for the presence of nitrites which the bacteria have produced from the ammonia.

At this point the ammonia level should drop as it is being converted into nitrites. When the ammonia level drops to zero or is very low add the same amount of ammonia that you added in the first place. Continue to monitor both the ammonia and nitrite levels until they drop to zero. Although it is not necessary you can also monitor the nitrate levels as it is interesting to observe them rising as they are produced from the nitrites.

Once the ammonia and nitrites drop to zero your tank is cycled. Now you should do a 60% water change being careful not to disturb the gravel at the bottom of the tank. Do not change the filter material as this now contains the good bacteria. You should now lower the temperature to a level that is right for the fish you will be going to add. Leave the tank alone for two or three hours then recheck it to make sure ammonia and nitrite levels are still zero.

Congratulations! You have now cycled your tank correctly and can now add your fish. Be careful not to overload the tank with fish immediately. It is far better to add the fish over about a month to allow the bacteria to continue to grow and to be able to cope with the maximum number of fish in the tank.

Maintaining Your Tank

Although we won't go into details of maintaining your tank here we will say that you must be careful to preserve the bacteria cultures that you have carefully encouraged to grow. This means that you should never completely change all of the water, only partial water changes are necessary, and never remove and clean all of the decorations and change the filter material at the same time.

A good moving checklist is a must-have, if you want your move to be smooth and with no major incidents or flaws. This applies to all sort of relocation situations, be it you’re moving house, office or apartment. It also concerns people who move inside the same country as well as those who have to go through an international move. This article is going to offer you a brief moving checklist for several relocation situations such as home moving, apartment moving and office moving. Depending on your specific case, you may want to add items to the list or to delete those ones which are not applicable.

Home Moving Checklist

  • Get moving truck rental quotes: try to do this as soon as you know your moving date, because last minute truck reservations may not be available and you want to make sure there will be a vehicle available for you on the move date. If you decide to hire a company to help you move, then you’ll have to ask for quotes on the complete relocation services, including people to load your boxes and your furniture in the truck, moving boxes, labels and all other required supplies.
  • Give away or sell old items you won’t use anymore: there’s no explanation for why we are storing so much things in our lives, but it’s a common habit for many people. Moves are the greatest opportunities to get rid of useless possessions. As a rule of the thumb, you can consider that if you haven’t used an item for two years, then you can give it away, as it’s probably not necessary for you. If you want, you can organize a garage sale.
  • Make inventory sheets: take the rooms one by one and write down on a list all items contained in each room. You could also use these sheets to make observations about the furniture condition before the move: scratches, damages, cracks and other similar things. Make sure to confront your lists with the movers, so you all agree on the furniture condition. That will be your insurance for the case your things would get damaged during the transportation.
  • Get moving supplies: if you’re only renting a truck, you’ll have to buy your own cardboard boxes, plastic bags, duct tape, labels, markers and rope strings. Make sure your boxes aren’t too big, or in case they are, don’t fill them completely, otherwise it will be really difficult to move them. If you need to pack books, you’d better remember this piece of advice, because paper is very heavy.
  • Announce insurance companies you’re moving: in case you’re changing the state or the country, you’ll have to transfer or even to cancel your insurance policies. Contact your agents, let them know you’re moving, and they’d give you advice how to proceed.
  • See if you can obtain employer benefits: this applies only in the case you’re relocating because of your job. Ask your HR people if you qualify for getting some funding for your move expenses.
  • Get your medical records: your doctors would either hand those records to you, or they could send them directly to medical services at your destination place.
  • Cancel utilities and services agreements: be sure to do this at least one month prior to the moving date, as some companies usually require 30 days notice.
  • Preorder items for your new home: there are department stores such as Walmart which would take your order and deliver your ordered items at the desired date, directly at your new place.
  • Return borrowed items: if you borrowed library books, movies, tools or anything else, make sure to return them before you go.
  • Review the house on the move day: after everything is loaded in the truck, don’t forget to take a look in all rooms to see if there are any items left behind. Also make sure the water, gas and electricity are switched off. Give the keys to your real estate agent, if that’s the case.

Office Moving Checklist

  • Delegate one of your employees to coordinate the move: choose somebody who’s used to supervise projects and who’s detail oriented and focused.
  • Check with the new owners when they’d be ready to let you in: an office move is different than a home move, because you have to be connected and wired from the very first day of your arrival. Phones need to be working, internet connection needs to be available, all offices need to be wired to the network. It would be best if you visited the new place by yourself in the week before the move, so you can make sure everything is settled and your business won’t have to suffer from lack of communication means.
  • Obtain office moving quotes from moving companies. It’s better to pay a bit more but have professionals to handle the move for you. Before contacting them, make sure you prepare a rough budget allocated for the operation.
  • Order new stationery and business cards: these should reflect your address change and also your phone numbers change, if that’s the case.
  • Make computer backups: your IT manager should make backups of all office computers, because hard disks might get damaged during the move, causing losses of important data.
  • Hire a cleaning service to clean up your old office: most probably, your agreement with the building owner requires that you leave the space clean, just as it was when you moved in. Your employees would surely leave behind a lot of stuff they don’t need anymore, so the whole place would be a big mess. That’s why it’s better to have professional cleaning services instead of asking your own people to do it.
  • Announce all employees in time: this is important, because people need to be prepared for the moving day, without causing troubles to the business. They should have their work done for that day just one day before, and they should not set important meetings a few days before and after the move. All deadlines of projects need to be reconsidered in order to accommodate the moving interval.

Last but not least, in all situations, don’t forget to make a moving checklist!

A moving truck rental can be very pricey if you treat it like an impulse shopping and go for the first rental company you come across. Even if the initial cost may look small, only think what happens in case of an accident, if the truck insurance doesn’t provide adequate coverage for that particular situation. Here are some basic tips to keep you away from many problems.

Not all truck rentals are the same: get multiple quotes

Moving house is most of the times an action which we plan long enough in advance as to be able to allow enough time for proper market research. Helping people relocate is a profitable and flourishing business, so chances are that wherever you may live, you’d still have at least three or four companies to choose from. Don’t shy from asking all of them for quotes. Just don’t forget to prepare your lesson well and have a thorough checklist when you call them.

Here’s a minimum of what your list could include:

  • Approximate size of the truck: if you don’t know how to estimate that, you can simply make a list of all big furniture items you need to have moved, then think to double that space, because furniture usually has stuff in it, which has to be transported separately, in boxes. That would take a lot of space, you can be sure of that.
  • Truck driver needed or not: if you can drive the truck by yourself, don’t forget to mention that. However, if you don’t have that type of driving license, you’ll need to rent the truck together with the driver.
  • Additional staff needed or not: if you’re a tiny, fragile, human being, most probably you won’t be able to move your furniture at all, not to mention loading it into the truck. Actually, nobody could do that as a one man show, so if you don’t have a team of solid friends and neighbors to help you, you could find it better to rent also the people from the truck rentals company, as you could get a better deal than if you did it separately.

Truck rentals are more popular than you think

moving_truck_rentals.jpgDon’t underestimate the number of people who need to hire trucks to get moved. About 1 in 6 Americans move each year, which means over 42 million people (U.S. Census Bureau). The same source states that the average American moves 11.7 times in a lifetime. Under these circumstances, and taking into account that most people would probably try to move in spring or in fall in order to avoid extreme temperatures, and that they’d rather move over the weekend than taking a day off their job, you’ll see that the earlier you make your truck reservation, the better. With all these considerations in mind, you'd also want to estimate as accurately as possible the period of time you need the truck for. Maybe you won't be able to find a full day truck rental at your desired date, but if half day could be enough for you to finish the task, then your chances could be bigger to find a rental company as smart as to couple two clients for one day and make money as if they'd had given it to only one customer for the whole day's time.

Besides, why pay for a whole day when you're going to finish earlier anyway? You could always do something else with the money difference, couldn't you?

Don’t rent a moving truck without insurance

If the truck comes with a driver, you probably don’t have to worry about accidents, because they would be the driver’s fault, not yours. However, if you’re going to drive the truck yourself, be very careful and read the insurance policy terms with the eyes wide open, otherwise you risk to get burnt and take lots of money out of your pocket in case you damage the truck. Moreover, you have to think also at the situation in which your truck is fine, but you scratch a street-full of parked cars. Those owners would probably need to have their repairs covered by you and if you don’t have insurance, your move is going to cost you a hell lot of money. Make sure to understand all terms of the rental agreement, because if you break them, your insurance policy may become void.

When you rent a car, not necessarily a moving truck, the agreement usually states that you have to return the car in the same condition as it was when you took it. This is why the truck’s condition has to be very well documented before you take it from the rental company’s parking. If you spot any minor damages to the truck body, make sure to write them down and eventually take some pictures and attach them to the rental agreement.

Most of the times, a moving truck rental is just an ordinary thing, but you need to make sure you’re preparing for the worst while expecting the best. Happy moving!

If you have a baby that you need to feed then it can be a very frustrating time.  You need to bear in mind it's not always easy to get your baby to eat and trying to force them isn't going to work.  There are different methods that you can use and one of them is baby finger foods.  Babies simply love to put just about everything into their mouths so you can take advantage of this habit with some finger foods.  Here are some foods that work very well in this respect:-

Apple
Avocado
Banana
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Carrot
Chicken
Cottage cheese
Mango
Melon
Pasta (well cooked)
Peach
Pear
Sweet Potato
Sweet red pepper
Kiwi fruit

You can either provide these foods individually or you can opt to give them as a salad.  Make sure that they are cut up into small pieces and the fruit should always be nice and ripe.  Vegetables should also be cooked well so that they are free of bacteria and it will also be easier to chew and swallow.  Babies are pretty lazy when it comes to chewing simply because they haven't learnt the importance of chewing food.  This is another reason to ensure that the food is cut up into small pieces as you don't want them to choke.

Eggs are great for your baby however you need to understand that egg whites can bring about allergies so shouldn't be given to a baby before 12 months old.  Eggs yolks on the other hand can be given from about 7 months or so.  Eggs yolks are full of all sorts of really great nutrients such as vitamin A and vitamin B12.  Make sure they have been cooked fully by scrambling them or boiling them.

When weaning a child off breast milk, try and avoid doing this too early.  Breast milk is full of so many fantastic nutrients you should ideally allow them to continue drinking it until they are 2 years old.  However you can start to additionally provide finger foods at the age of 9 months (some people say 7 months).  At this age your child should also have the ability to hold items in their hands.

Allowing your baby to decide when and how much to eat is a good because they need to develop this skill sooner or later.  You can't decide for your child forever.  So give finger foods to your baby and see how you get on.

While Christmas trees always come in the same traditional green color, a more wild and dynamic way for the more adventurous person is to purchase a red Christmas tree.  Red Christmas trees are definitely an eye-catcher and will be a great conversation starter in your home.  You can either purchase a red Christmas tree or make one yourself by purchasing a white tree and spray painting it with red spray paint.

Red Christmas trees are now available at local stores and come in different sizes just like regular trees. They also cost the same as regular and traditional Christmas trees.  Some of them are available in kits which come with matching ornaments as well.  However, if you purchase trees that come in a kit, the tree may be smaller than usual.  These trees come in several sizes from tabletop trees to the regular 6 foot tree to over 20 feet.

Since red can be an overpowering color, always evaluate the room you will be placing it in before purchasing your tree.  If it is to be placed in a small room, it is best to use a tabletop or a small tree.  If the tree is to be placed in a larger room such as a living room, then a larger tree can be used.

A red Christmas tree be it decorated or plain is sure to be the center of attention in any room.  Its brightness will surely bring the Christmas spirit into any room in your household.

Pink Christmas trees can be found easily nowadays at any local store.  They come in different shapes and sizes.  Price ranges are the same as the traditional green Christmas tree.  There are also some pink Christmas trees available that come with matching ornaments, which is perfect if you want everything to match.  These usually come in a kit and can be quite cheaper.  The tree however may be smaller than usual.  If you want to purchase a larger tree, you can also purchase the ornaments and decorations separately.

Before purchasing a tree, take into consideration the size of the room you will be putting up your pink Christmas tree in.  If you wish to put a tree in your little girl’s bedroom, a big tree may overpower it.  A good choice is to use a tabletop tree.  If the tree is to be put up in a family room or a playroom, a large pink Christmas tree is a good choice and will definitely look great.  Always determine where you are to place the tree first so you can also determine its size. A pink Christmas tree sure may not be traditional, but it will bring your little princess’ dreams to life!

Many people love to wear birthstone jewelry with the gem appropriate for their birthday. it makes the wearer feel special and is a wonderful, thoughtful gift for a loved one. There is a long history of gems giving special powers to their wearers and, although today we realise these are just colorful myths it is interesting to see how our ancestors regarded gems and the powers they believed they held.

Origins of the Birthstone Tradition

The color of the gems was originally used to assign meanings and powers and were related to the signs of the Zodiac. Only later were gems associated with the months of the year and different gems have been assigned to the months over the years. Today most people use the scheme proposed in 1912 by Association of Jewelers in America which includes some precious stones plus some less expensive alternatives. In December 2002 the American Gem association added Tanzanite to the list as an alternative birthstone for December.

Other schemes include the Ayurvedic originating in Indian philosophy and said to be dated back to 1500 BC, and the mystical scheme originating in Tibet more than 1000 years ago. However the most commonly used scheme continues to be that put forward by the Association of Jewelers. With different schemes to choose from and alternative birthstones within the scheme there is sure to be a gem that you will like whatever your birth month!

Security AlarmsFor both homeowners and businesses alike, the need to protect buildings and property from burglary and theft has never been higher. While few would argue that people should spend their time worrying about potential danger to their families or their property, fewer still would deny that the threat is real. To counter it, it is incumbent upon every person to plan for their own security. Fortunately, there is no shortage of available security options designed to meet almost any level of security threat. One of the most common of these options involves the use of security alarms.

Like other security measures, security alarms are by no means a foolproof method for eliminating the potential for burglary or other crimes. They are, however, one of the most effective ways in which a majority of home and business invasions can be prevented. They serve as a deterrent from the so-called “opportunity criminals” – those who burglarize the most vulnerable locations. The fact is that just having your home or business protected by security alarms – and posting a sign that loudly proclaims the alarms’ presence – will cause all but the most serious of criminals to look elsewhere for easier prey.

The best security alarms protect buildings, property, and people from not only the threat of burglars and others who would do you harm, but from fires and various toxins as well. The protection provided by alarm systems not only provides peace of mind, but is also beneficial from an economic standpoint that goes well beyond the safeguarding of your property. Many insurance companies offer significant premium discounts for homes and buildings that are protected by security alarms. In many cases, the insurance savings alone cover much of the cost associated with maintaining the system!

When choosing security alarms, it is important that you research the systems and the companies that provide and monitor them. Some of the smaller security companies offer what seem to be secure guarantees, but what they can do on a case-by-case basis may differ greatly from what they would be capable of in the midst of a major disaster or state of upheaval. For that reason, selecting a provider that offers monitoring redundancies and back-up stations is important. After all, natural and man-made disasters are more than capable of overwhelming a single monitoring station.

You also need to look at the level of security that you need. Do you merely want alarms that sound when someone attempts to force entry into the building, or do you want exterior lights, video surveillance, and other security measures as well? While these added features can greatly enhance the security of alarm systems, they also significantly increase the cost as well.

In addition, security alarms can also include motion detectors, smoke detectors, and various levels of monitoring and reporting. With all of the many features and options available, it is important that you not only research the type of system that you need, but that you ensure that you are adequately trained as to how the system works after it is installed. Only then can you go to sleep each night secure that you have done everything you can to protect your most precious belongings and loved ones.
