Why travertine floor tiles are a great choice for your home
Another natural stone that has been used since ancient times, travertine marble continues to be used in the present for a variety of applications, and is characterized by irregular holes on the surface. Travertine floor tiles have been used in flooring, countertops, backsplashes, patios, and gardens.

Travertine is a cousin of marble

travertine can be described as falling between marble and limestone, possessing both stones' versatility and beauty such as the varied colors and venations, and old-world appeal. It is a very durable material and very versatile too. The varied colors of travertine depend on the iron content of the stone from which it is cut. The resulting colors may range from a very light ivory, going darker and deeper to a reddish brown, and sometimes even gold.

Travertine as varied as marble
Travertine, like marble, is available in a number of finishes, colors, and vein patterns to give you a wide array of design options that will fit your needs. Polished travertine resembles marble in appearance and is shiny and very smooth. Honed tiles are smooth as well, but they have more of a matte finish. There are also brushed and tumbled varieties of travertine marble, which are more textured.

Keeping it pristine
While a hard and durable material, travertine tiles are not quite like granite or marble when it comes to wear. It is a porous material, so spills must be cleaned off immediately after they happen. Also avoid using vinegar or any citric acid-based cleaners because they may erode the surface of your travertine floor. Staining can be avoided on your travertine marble floor by applying a sealant to protect it from water and other substances that could possibly stain it. The more sealant on the travertine marble, the less likely for it to stain.

I think that most people have the idea when you say the words gutter cleaning. You need to climb up to your gutter system and scoop out any and all debris that might be clogging them. For this main part of the cleaning process you need to gutter cleaning essentials such as a ladder, a gutter scoop, a trash bag, and personal protective equipment like a mask and gloves. However, there are other areas of gutter the gutter system and cleaning these areas needs some special consideration.

One of the most overlooked gutter parts is the corners. There are actually two different types of corners, inside corners and outside corners. Inside corners are places where the roof line comes to an inward facing point. If you are traveling left down the roof line and then the roof line turns to the left, that is an inside corner. Outside corners are where the house comes to an outside facing point or a corner. If you are traveling left down the roof line and the roof line turns to the right, that is an outside corner. These areas are some of the easiest to clog because the width of the gutter system gets a little smaller. Inside corners are a particular problem because the roof often has a valley at these points and that is a great place for leaves and debris to end up. Then the pile slowly travels down the valley and into the gutters. Your regular gutter scoop might not work here so you should get something small or prepare to use your hands.

Another gutter part to consider is the seams. No gutter system is made of one continuous piece. Each system is made of several pieces and where they come together and are attached to one another is a seam. The seams are places where dirt and grime can get caked on and even work its way under one edge of the seam and start to make the outside of the gutter system look dirty. To clean in these areas you not only need regular gutter cleaning tools to scoop away the debris, but you need to scrub. That is why a gutter brush is important. A gutter brush is a round cylinder shaped brush that looks similar to a very fat test tube brush. It should have a handle that starts out at a ninety degree angle to the brush and then turns another ninety degrees where you hold it so that you hand is not getting stuck in the gutters.

Finally, you need to consider the downspouts. These are the parts of the gutter system that carry the water from the roof line down the side of the house and away from the foundation. You cannot scoop debris out of your downspouts because they are completely enclosed. Instead, you should test them by putting water down the top with the garden hose and making sure a similar amount of water flows out the bottom at a similar speed and in a reasonable amount of time. If you determine there is a clog, then you should try to see where it is with a flashlight. Then, you will have to take apart the downspout at the closest seam so that you can reach the clog.

When you do kitchen remodeling, never lay aside the importance of your carpet flooring. Although carpets belong to the floor and are made basically to be messed up, it still enhances the beauty of the floor. That is one sorry fact a carpet owner needs to accept, willingly or otherwise. Others even restrict footwear on their carpet flooring, yet, their carpets still get dirty.

However, if you wish to keep your carpet flooring looking its best for as long as possible, there are easy and effective methods in doing it. And you only need to maintain a regular schedule of general carpet cleaning to ensure its looks and its cleanliness as well. It will even prevent the reproduction of germs and bacteria in your house, making it a healthier place to live in. Below are some helpful do-it-yourself carpet care tips.

General Carpet Care

• In choosing a carpet, pick one that has been treated with soil resistant chemicals. It is easier to maintain.
• Do not wait for your carpets to get really dirty. Vacuum it frequently to diminish its wear and tear, especially in high traffic areas.
• Use a vacuum with a better brush which can be either an upright or a cylinder tank with a power nozzle. The brush loosens dirt from the carpet fibers and makes it easier for the vacuum to suck the dirt away.
• Pick up any visible debris and small items on the carpet before you begin in vacuuming it. The hose or belt could get damaged if the vacuum sucks them in.
• Vacuum with slow, even and overlapping parallel strokes.
• Always start from the bottom and work up when vacumming carpeted stairs.
• To prevent discoloring of carpets, cover carpet areas around and under furniture legs and bases before polishing furniture.
• To prevent permanent stains and dark patches on the carpet, any spillage should be cleaned up at once.
• Deep-clean carpet at least once a year. You can either do it on your own using a commercial carpet cleaner following the instructions of the manufacturer or call a professional carpet cleaner.
• Definitely, an Oriental carpet has to be cleaned professionally because it usually has a hand-painted finish whose colors may run. You will need to hire carpet cleaning services for this.
• Indentations in the carpet can be raised by rubbing areas with the edge of a coin. Do so before wetting the carpet at cleaning time.

Removing Carpet Stains

• The rule of thumb is to treat any spill as soon as it happens, because difficult stains will leave unsightly marks if left to dry out.
• Liquid spills should be blotted out with paper towels or white cloth towel. Solid should be scraped away.
• Choose the stain remover which works best for your kind of carpet: acid (lemon juice and vinegar) for polyester and wool, and alkali (ammonia and borax) on cellulose, cotton, rayon and silk.

Treating Specific Carpet Stains

• Alcohol, soft drinks, fruit juices, wine - Blot the spill. Mix one teaspoon of liquid dish or fabric detergent with one quart of warm water and one teaspoon of white vinegar. Use this detergent-water-vinegar solution on the carpet. Rinse. Blot dry.
• Coffee, cream, ice cream, tea, milk - Treat as above mentioned, but apply a dry-cleaning solvent afterwards. Let the carpet dry and brush pile.
• Blood- Immediately apply cold water on the affected area before blotting. Repeat if necessary. If stain still remains stubborn, treat with coffee spills.
• Feces, urine and vomit - Scrape up or blot the spill, whichever is applicable. Apply detergent-water-vinegar solution, rinse and dry.
• Ball pen ink - Use a clean cloth moistened with dry cleaning solvent or paint thinner to rub the stain with. Work on it using clean areas of the cloth until the stain is gone.
• Candle wax - Cover with brown paper or paper towel. Run a warm iron over so that the wax melts and is absorbed .Work on it until no trace of wax is left.
• Chewing gum - Remove as much as you can. Then use a dry-cleaning fluid or paint thinner to remove whatever is left.
• Grease and oil - Dip a cloth ball in paint thinner and dab affected area. Blot dry.
• Mud - Allow it to dry, then vacuum off. Apply denatured alcohol on the residual stain, and then treat with detergent-water-vinegar solution. Rinse. Let dry.

Although carpet cleaning may not be the most enjoyable task in the home, you cannot afford to ignore it. It will prove to be more costly than a regular maintenance would if your carpet wears out prematurely. Believe me, it is worth your time and effort.

Cordless drills make an excellent choice for those situations when you don’t have a power supply close to you, but still need to drill some holes. Decades ago, people would have used manual drilling machines, but they were awfully difficult to operate and if you needed to drill through a concrete wall, that could have been an impossible task. Today, nobody needs to use manual tools anymore, because cordless ones were invented and they are good and cheap. The first step when buying a cordless drill is to decide what you need it for: do you intend to use it heavily, like at least once a day, or do you just need it for your weekend hobbies and occasional home improvement projects? If you’re not a heavy user, then you could be fine with a cheaper cordless drill. However, if you’re rather a professional, then you’ll need to take more money out of your wallet and buy a professional tool, which is built for heavy usage.

This cordless drill guide is aimed at amateur users, so only reviews of cheaper cordless drills are included.

Black & Decker CDC180ASB 18-Volt Compact Drill

cordless drill black and deckerThis is one of the newer cordless drill models from Black and Decker and it’s nicer than older ones because it’s smaller, yet more powerful. The tool offers a good precision and control thanks to its variable speed which goes from zero to 650 RPM. As a general rule, you don’t want to buy a drill or a saw which doesn’t feature variable speed, because they are very difficult to control in the beginning of the cutting or drilling process, when you have to position the blade or the bit on the material to be worked.

Another nice feature of this cordless drill is the keyless chuck which allows changing bits fast and easy. This is important when you need to change the bits during the work: if you drill through concrete, you’ll have to first use a smaller sized bit, then switch to a bigger one. Without the keyless chuck, you could easily get burns from the bit which would already be very hot by the time you’ll want to replace it.

The Black & Decker CDC180ASB comes with a cordless drill kit which includes 20 accessories, a storage case, a 18-volt slide pack batteries plus DC charger and one double-ended bit tip.

  • Tool size: 13.7” W x 12.5” H x 4” D
  • Weight: 8.0 pounds
  • Warranty: 2 years
  • Price: approx. $50

Hitachi DS12DVF3 12-Volt Ni-Cad 3/8-Inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit

cordless drill hitachiThis cordless drill is a bit more expensive than the previous one, but it’s surely nicer. It has a two-speed transmission and a 22-stage clutch, which helps increasing the precision driving in all sort of materials such as steel, wood or aluminum. Moreover, the non-slip elastomer grip offers an increased comfort to the user. The 5-position belt hook has two bit holders, so you don’t have to search for your bits all over the place and interrupt your work.

This cordless drilling machine comes with a nice accessory, a flashlight and a speed charger which charges the batteries in as little as 30 minutes. The box also includes a seven bits set and a carrying case. The cordless drill battery charger is universal, so it fits many other Hitachi tools.

  • Tool size: 4 x 2 x 10 inches
  • Weight: 12.8 pounds
  • Warranty: 5 years
  • Price: approx. $70

Kawasaki 840110 19-1/5-Volt Cordless Drill Kit

cordless drill kawasakiThis drill has 25 torques settings and a built-in bubble level. The 3/8-Inch keyless chuck is a useful accessory, for quickly changing the bits. The no-load rotation speed is 400 RPM and the full operating speed is 1100 RPM. The 25 torque positions should be good enough to give you the required level of precision, so this Kawasaki it’s a tool to be considered.

Before buying it, maybe it would be wiser though to check out some consumer reviews, because there were complaints that it lacked proper alignment, thus wobbling when operated. However, this could have been a separate case, an exception, and it probably got fixed during the warranty period.

The rechargeable batteries are NiCD, so they are not the very best, but if you don't need to use the drill for a very long time in one shot, they should be perfect. The tool comes with a 20-piece bit kit which should suffice for most household jobs. The carrying case is included in the box.

  • Weight: 10 pounds (this is the shipping weight, the cordless drill is lighter)
  • Price: $60

Gazebo kits are the fastest solution to have a beautiful gazebo by building it yourself. Just like garage kits, gazebo kits are delivered with detailed instructions, so assembling them is easy, if you follow the plans. Most garden furniture kits are fully customizable, so you can give them the destination of your choice, be it an outdoor office space, a workout room or a hobbies room, or simply a leisure space where to enjoy your morning coffee and your dinner. All you need is the garden where to place your construction.

If you were thinking that you need to be a professional carpenter in order to be able to assemble such a kit, you may be pleased to find out that you don’t. Everything you need is included with your purchase and all panels and accessories are pre-cut and with holes already in place. All hardware is also included, so if you’re careful to combine them the right way, you won’t encounter many problems. When we think of a kit, we usually understand a structure with a rather boring shape, so many people may shy away from buying them. In case of gazebos, you can have multiple shape options such as octagon, hexagon or square.

In terms of functionality, this can also be customized according to your needs. For instance, you can have a spa gazebo for prices starting from $6500 - $7000. If you just need a covered place to spend your summer evenings in or to organize garden parties, you can have exactly that. Far from being boring, gazebos that come in a box can be very nicely finished, with topper finial and other details that make the charm of such a building. Of course, everything has a price, so the more details and luxury you want, the higher your price will be. If you don’t care about such things, you can have a gazebo kit for as little as $600-$700. This will include only the basic pillars structure and the roof and it won’t be usable on bad weather. However, if you live in a region where the weather is nice all year round, why pay more for features that you don’t need?

One of the most appreciated manufacturers are Amish Country Gazebos, a company that sells gazebo kits at prices starting from $1695. Their website offers a very nice feature of designing your own gazebo. This is how it goes: first of all, you select the octagon gazebo size from 8 ft, 10 ft, 12 ft, 14 ft, 16 ft, 18 ft or 20 ft. Then you choose the material. The two options here are wood or vinyl. The next step in the design program is the roof choice, with two possible variants: Majestic or Pagoda. Then you’ll have to choose your roof shingles: cedar or asphalt. Then you are presented two cornice styles, straight and waved, followed by the style of braces, which can be either standard or Victorian. Posts can be straight or turned, depending on the style you want to have. Balusters or turned spindles can also be straight or turned. If you want to have a screen package or an electrical package, you can select the options from the next menu, as well as the number of bench sections. If you want, you can have your gazebo kit painted, or you can choose it in clear wood finish. After you’re done, you’ll see the photo of your gazebo and a list of all features you’ve chosen during the design process. There’s no info regarding the price for your customized gazebo, but you can always call Amish Country Gazebos to speak with one of their specialists who can offer you guidance so you can make the best choice.
