V8 tomato juice has long been set apart from other denizens of the juice aisle in that it is widely considered to be the healthiest choice on the shelf. After all, it is made from vegetables rather than fruits, and since vegetables are so healthy, that means that V8 itself is also healthy, right? While there is no doubt that there are certainly juices out there that are worse for you, the answer to the question, "Is V8 good for you?" is a little more complicated, and there are a few health concerns regarding V8 that should be taken into account.
The primary concern regarding V8 juices is the high sodium content in most of their products, as high as 420 mg in a single eight ounce serving. While there is indeed a low sodium version of the original V8, at 140 mg of sodium for every eight ounce serving, it remains far too high. High sodium intake is associated with a wide range of medical conditions, from bloating and water retention to more serious conditions such as kidney disease and high blood pressure. It goes without saying that if you suffer from any chronic medical condition, you should monitor your sodium intake carefully.
The second concern regarding V8 tomato juice is related to how it is marketed. Granted, not many of us enjoy eating a plate full of vegetables when we would rather have a hamburger, but we also understand the need for it. The primary marketing campaign for V8 over the past several years involves someone who either neglected or chose to not eat their vegetables, after which a helpful narrator tells them that they could have had a V8 instead.
This explicitly lays out the idea that V8 is a perfectly valid and healthy replacement for vegetables, when that simply is not the case. V8 juices are not only made from concentrate, but they have removed the majority of the fiber from the original vegetables, and it is in part that fiber that makes vegetables so healthy. Another concern is that the pasteurization process destroys many, if not all of the healthy enzymes that are so richly concentrated in fresh vegetables. Unfortunately, despite the label, drinking a glass of vegetable juice is not the same as eating a salad.
The idea of a healthy vegetable beverage is a good one, and may well be a good idea as a replacement for soda pop and other sugary drinks, but when it comes to replacing otherwise healthy vegetation with V8, the healthy benefits just aren't there, and if you have a medical condition, all that extra sodium may well cause additional harm. Sadly, when it comes to eating a healthy diet and making good choices, this is one shortcut that simply doesn't lead anywhere.
