There are as many causes of overeating as there are people in the world. Everyone's minds, bodies, and lives fit together and work very differently from each other. What may cause one person to turn to food may not affect the person beside them at all. Or maybe that person turns to another addition, such as gambling or alcohol. Many of us overeat because of emotional reasons. When we are feeling sad or depressed, we all have some sort of "security blanket" that we turn to in order to feel better. Many people who succumb to emotional eating use food as a coping mechanism to avoid having to deal with whatever issues are causing that sadness. Type 2 diabetes, for example, is a condition in which the cells of the body are unable to properly make use of the glucose in the blood. This causes the cells to "become hungry," which sends signals to the brain telling you to eat something. This is just one example.
Some of us also overeat because of social reasons. If you spend a lot of time eating out or hanging out in a bar with friends, there will usually be plenty of snacks and other food around. This sort of situation can lead to overeating simply because we as humans have a tendency to try to fit in with the rest of the crowd. If others around us are eating, we are more likely to eat as well, even if we are not hungry.
There are many causes of overeating that lead many of us to consume more than we should. Maybe you spend a lot of time in social settings where food is present. Maybe you eat in order to dull the pain of depression. Whatever reason you may have, the best thing that you can do for your weight loss efforts is to locate the reason for your overeating and address it.
