Having type 2 diabetes means that you will be facing many challenges. Watching your blood sugar levels becomes extremely important, as well as monitoring everything that affects them, from your diet to your exercise levels and more. It can be quite a difficult prospect to eat right when you have a stressful job that entails long hours. While there are occasionally exceptions, cafeterias and vending machines, in general, do not contain anything that diabetics should be eating. But being trapped at work is no excuse; there are definitely methods that you can use in order to get the foods you should be eating and keeping your blood sugar under proper control.
When most people are at work, they have only the vending machine to turn to when they are looking for a snack. While no one should ideally eat these foods, the high levels of refined carbohydrates makes them especially dangerous for diabetics. There is nothing particularly nutritious to be found in these kinds of foods, and all that sugar and flour will do nothing more than cause a blood sugar spike.
Bringing your own snacks to work each day is the best thing you can do in order to eliminate this as a potential problem. When it comes to snacking, it is hard to do better than fresh vegetables and cheeses, so they make a great option if you have a way to keep them cold. Fiber-rich foods such as celery are much better choices when you are a diabetic. When refrigeration is not available, you can always take a bag of nuts with you instead. They are one of the easiest snack options that you can choose, and are also filled with fiber.
Unfortunately, the same lack of nutrition that plagues snack foods also tends to pop up in the cafeteria as well. In an effort to keep food costs down, most cafeterias import processed foods that contain a good deal of flour, fat, and sugar. These foods are obviously very unhealthy when it comes to a diabetic's blood sugar levels. Still, there are even problems associated with not eating anything that you will also want to avoid.
So, what do we do to eliminate this problem? You can always bring in your own lunch. The only danger that you may want to prepare yourself for is pressure from your coworkers to eat unhealthy foods along with them. Just try to keep in mind that when you are diabetic, it is much more important that you do everything in your power to control your blood sugar and have a healthier tomorrow.
Staying healthy in general can be quite difficult when you are forced to work long hours in order to make enough money to get by, but it can be even more difficult when you are diabetic. Just make sure to plan ahead and you will not have to worry about a normal range; blood sugar will take care of itself as long as you make smart choices.
