If you bulk buy your food, or do bulk cooking sessions, then you need somewhere to store what you have made. Most people store foods in plastic containers, but recently there has been a shift towards glass storage containers and jars.

Glass storage jars and containers are non toxic and inert - that is they do not react with the food stored in them, even when heated. This is in marked contrast with plastic containers, which leach chemicals into food when heated in the microwave, (and fatty foods absorb these readily).

Before you buy your glass containers, you need to determine what types of food you will be storing in them. If you are doing bulk cooking and then storing the food in the freezer, you might wish to look at glass containers that are microwave friendly, such as Snapware glass storage containers. If you want to cook in the oven, then freeze, and then re-heat in the microwave, you might wish to consider Pyrex or Anchor Hocking containers, both of which can handle both the oven and microwave and come with plastic lids for storage.

If you are storing dry foods, such as rice, sugar, flour, pasta, beans or cereals that you have bought in bulk, then consider a glass manufacturer such as Bormioli Rocco, or perhaps purchase Libbey Storage Jars. They come in a wide variety of sizes, and can store up to a gallon. You can also get old-fashioned glass jars of the type your grandmother stored cookies and candies in. These look good too, and glass jars full of cookies usually give a warm and welcoming look to your kitchen. They always come with fitted lids to keep moisture out and ensure that what is stored within stays fresh and dry.

If you are a jelly, jam or pickle maker, you can get glass canning jars to store your produce. These tend to have very tightly sealing glass lids to ensure there are no leaks or spills. You can also use these to store condiments, sauces and soups. You can also get small glass jars to store spices such as cinnamon and cloves in, or even spice mixtures that you have ground yourself (such as curry spices).

If you have a baby, then you will probably be doing a lot of bulk cooking of baby food, just to save yourself the time. You can now get specially made glass bowls with fitted lids to store baby foods in, each small enough to hold just one meal, which you can take out of the fridge or freezer as you need it.

There are glass storage containers to suit every need, and you will find that making the switch from plastic pays dividends in your health as well as in how your kitchen looks and functions.
