A bigger floor area definitely means a higher market value. For apartment units, condominiums, and houses, every square foot of floor area matters. This dictates its price among other factors such as location, accessibility to important establishments, and view. In a fast-paced world where everyone is virtually too busy to spend time cooking a hearty meal at home, kitchens are put at low priority for floor area allocation. This is almost always the case for commercial dwellings. Only those who can afford bigger houses and/or remodel their kitchen can truly enjoy a more spacious kitchen. But instead of sulking at this unfortunate reality, we should try to make do with what we have. A good design can transform your kitchen and make it look spacious and inviting.

Here are some tips for designing your small kitchen:

1.    A small kitchen calls for small appliances. As much as possible, purchase the smaller version of the appliances you need in your kitchen such as microwave ovens, blenders, toaster, coffee maker, stove, refrigerator, etc. Opt for multi-function or compact appliances if you have to. This can save space and make your kitchen size more proportional to the things inside it.
2.    Make use of the walls in your kitchen. Aside from mounting some kitchen appliances on them like the microwave oven, include cabinets and shelves for storage of your plates and supplies. Hooks can also be tastefully mounted on the walls for hanging cooking pans but I’d rather they be stored neatly inside the cabinets.
3.    An island kitchen lay out is best for a small kitchen. The island serves a dual purpose as a working area on top and a storage area at the bottom. However, if the island is still too small for you to accommodate your chopping board, do not worry. Choose a chopping board that is wide enough to sit snuggly over your sink and you can do your chopping, dicing, slicing, and filleting on that space.
4.    If you run out of space to store your large pans, you can install and rack that hangs from the ceiling just over your island. Install hooks on that rack and your pans can dangle freely from that. Make sure the rack is not too high that it becomes a burden to reach for your pans nor too low as the pans can hit you on the head while going about the kitchen.
5.    Proper lighting can trick the eyes into believing that a space looks bigger. Install lights under the cabinets and the counter to create the illusion of a bigger space.

Retail interior design is basically a combination of interior designing in the retailing industry. It incorporates advertising and architecture. Since a retail place is primarily used for displaying and selling products to customers, it should be designed to create an inviting and efficient ambiance for the people who come in. The interior design of a store is critical in luring clients to come. The efficient design should promote a pleasurable experience for people to browse, select, try on, and purchase the items of their choice.

The storefront of your retail space is an important part to pay attention to. It is what the passing customers can see and it acts as your advertising space for the services or products you offer or sell. It is wise to have large windows or glass walls for your storefront in order to provide people a sneak peak of the products you have inside. If your store is part of a retail chain, use the uniform interior design but you can always add minor modifications to make your store more attractive. A new change can excite the interest of customers and might just draw them inside your retail space.

Inside the store, the design and floor lay out should coincide with the products that the store is selling. If you have a car accessories shop, it would be best to have large display racks of tires, mags (magnesium alloy wheels), and bumpers off to one side of the store while the small car accessories and parts to the other side. For clothing stores, it is important to have enough space to go about browsing the items. There should be enough shelves on the walls, and racks on the center. It is also important to have at least two dressing rooms at the back and that these dressing rooms should be big enough for large clients to fit in. A well-lighted store with small light bulb under the shelves and cabinets makes the space look larger. Customers would not want a dim store because that would make it difficult to choose and inspect the items being sold. Unless of course if your store is a Halloween specialty store or has a theme that goes well with a dark space then by all means, go with dim lighting.  Cool and neutral colors will create a sense of elegance inside the store. However, if your store is a candy shop or has a fun and wild theme, a funky clash of bright colors can do the trick.

In the retailing business, it is hard enough to have customers buy and patronize your products let alone draw them inside your store in the first place. There is obviously a high demand in setting the appropriate environment in a retail space. Creativity, uniqueness, charm, functionality, and cost are just among several factors to consider. Keep in mind that in a retailing space, the interior design can virtually make or break the deal.

For a business that thrives on good food, wine, and ambiance, interior designing is a critical aspect to consider. In order to attract customers and future clients into your restaurant, you have got to make a good impression. And the best way to keep people coming back to a place is the feeling of warmth and coziness it exudes. If you are targeting a specific niche, always try to create the specific ambiance fit for that group. The atmosphere you create in your restaurant reflects the kind of customers you have. It is important that a restaurant’s interior design should be as appealing as its good food and services.

A perfect restaurant interior design should incorporate functionality, coziness, and suitability to your clients’ every wish. Apart from serving food and creating an alluring ambience, it also has to have the amenities that your clients would want. If your restaurant caters to executives then it is empirical that you provide a setting that can let them talk about business with privacy. If you cater to large groups of people who may want to have their meetings held in your restaurant, it is wise to have a function hall that can accommodate them.

Furniture can add elegance to your place. If you plan on attracting the executives and the rich into your restaurant, investing in high-end furniture and antique items is the best way to go. These people value expensive things and they will be more than willing to pay more bucks for your food and exclusive place. If you want your restaurant to be casual but classy, purchase the modern-inspired furniture. Keep it chic and stylish. However, if you want a laid back environment for your clients, you can always style your restaurant with common but tasteful furniture. The tables should not be too high or too low for your average folk. The seats should not be too narrow either. Make sure they are wide enough with deep cushion. Your customers will be seated for most of their time in your restaurant so you need to make them comfortable throughout their stay by having good selection of chairs.

Color in your restaurant also plays a role in setting up the ambiance. Neutral and subdued tones are best if you are projecting an elegant ambiance. Loud and contrasting colors are schemes for disaster. They are sore the eyes and do not create a relaxed eating environment. Have your colors blend with the type of furniture you have. They should project a single kind of ambiance. Mismatching the two is just wrong.

Many home owners who are considering different kitchen island designs would inevitably be faced with a multitude of options to choose from. After all, it can be quite a challenging task to determine what designs would be best suited when building a structure in the middle of a kitchen that would serve different purposes aside from simply cooking or preparing food.  It is therefore important to derive inspiration from design ideas based on the the available floor space in the kitchen area.

Ideally, kitchen island designs should have design inspirations that originate from earlier versions found in older farm houses and medieval palace kitchens. These versions are spacious enough to enable more than one kitchen staff or cook to prepare food. Then, home owners and kitchen designers need to work together to determine how a particular design would suit a modern family's needs. Aside from preparing food, modern kitchen islands should have enough space to accommodate social activities around the area without losing their functional features. For instance, a well-designed kitchen island can have a highly ergonomic layout to strategically place sinks, refrigerators and stove close enough to each other to be easily reached.

Keeping these requirements in mind, most kitchen design professionals recommend the installation of kitchen islands in kitchens with floor layouts in the forms of the letter G, L or U.  Anything smaller than the required space for these floor layouts will render any kitchen island designs ineffective and  instead, cause obstruction instead of convenience.

For kitchen islands with stoves, it is also highly recommended to install an overhead cooking ventilation systems to get rid of cooking smells, smoke and steam that may overwhelm the entire kitchen. Coupled with a second sink, a kitchen design with these two features will be easier to clean and maintain.

To enhance the social function of the space, it is also highly recommended by kitchen designers to install more shelf space. Additional shelf space will be valuable for containing cookbooks, kitchen collectibles and even a television for the entire family to enjoy.

Additionally, good kitchen island designs are recommended to use natural light whenever possible. This will make the space look even more inviting and conducive for communal activities.

These are just a few of the various issues that home owners must think about when planning an efficiently designed kitchen islands.  When built with the right design guidelines and an expert kitchen designer, a customized kitchen island will stand the test of time for families to enjoy for many years.
