Despite the fact that stainless steel is very good at resisting rust and corrosion it isn’t 100% perfect at doing so.  Which means that you need to do your best to keep your stainless steel appliance lovely and clean to prevent any problems from occurring.  Cleaning stainless steel doesn’t have to be difficult but there are few rules that you ought to try and adhere to.

One thing that you need to understand is that many stainless steel appliances come with a lacquer varnish to help protect the metal underneath.  So make sure you know whether your stainless steel appliance comes with this lacquer finish or not because it can make a difference as to how you go about cleaning it.

With the lacquer varnish you need to be more careful because you want to avoid damaging it.  Your appliance will have come with instruction and should have included instruction on cleaning.  Generally what you need to avoid is any scourers or products with a rough scratchy surface.

When you want to start cleaning stainless steel you should begin with warm soapy water on a soft sponge or cloth.  If the stains are only mild the soapy water should be sufficient.  Then dry it down with a dry tea towel.

If you’re cleaning stainless steel which is very dirty then you will need something a bit more heavy duty than just soapy water.  A mild detergent can in these cases be enough to do the job.  Then dry it with a towel to prevent sport from appearing.

There are also stainless steel cleaners that you can buy that are specially made for this purpose.  Make sure that whatever product you buy doesn’t contain chlorine bleach because it’s very harsh and can even corrode the metal.  Be very careful about this because a lot of multi-purpose cleaners have bleach in it so you need read the packaging.

So basically if you’ve got food stains, finger prints or anything else for that matter on your stainless steel appliances you need to be careful about what you use.  Just because it’s called “stainless” doesn’t mean that it will never rust, corrode or become pitted.  You need to keep good care of it and only use mild chlorine-free products or products made for stainless steel.  And always rinse and dry after you have finished cleaning your appliances.

If you have anything that is made from metal and is starting to show signs of rust then you will really want to have that attended to in order to prevent it from getting any worse.  It’s a very sad fact that many people turn a blind eye to rust and other defects that need repairing.  I guess people just have to many other things to do.  It’s a shame because if rust is left alone it will only get worse and worse.  It can happen so quickly and before you know it the rust is beyond repair.

So if you don’t want to be like this and would rather attend to your rust problem then this is great.  There’s no shortage of products on the market intended to help you get rid of rust from metal.  Many of the products are created with the DIY enthusiast in mind so should be pretty easy to understand and follow the instructions they provide.  There are also products being sold to help prevent the rust from occurring in the first place which is truly something you want to consider.

OK, so when it comes to getting rid of rust from metal you need to scrape and sand the rust away from the inflicted area.  Be careful that you use the appropriate tool depending on the item you are wanting to repair.  A wire brush and sandpaper can work well in most cases.  Sometimes the area of rust is so great that you can’t possibly do all the scraping and sanding by hand.  In these circumstances you should use a power tool such as a sandblaster or a wire brush attached to an electric drill.

Other approaches to getting rid of the rust include products that you place onto the rust and it will then eat away at it to make it easier to remove.  Phosphoric acid is frequently used for this purpose and is often sold as “naval jelly.”  It’s a thick gel which can be applied to many different surfaces, even surfaces which are upside down!  When the product as done its job you can simply wipe it away and you will have nice metal underneath.  If it doesn’t work fully the first time you may need to reapply it.

An anti-corrosive primer can then be applied.  Make sure you have cleaned the area before applying it.  The primer will really help to protect the metal and keep it in tip top condition.  You can then apply a couple of layers of primer to protect the metal even further and to give it a good base for the final coat or sealer or paint.

If you want to paint the metal you can basically use anything you want however it’s very much a good idea to look for paints that are specifically designed for use on metal.  There are even paints that have been developed to help prevent rust from occurring.  Have a look out for the paints by Rust-Oleum and Benjamin Moore.

So when you are dealing with the topic of rust you need to act quickly to prevent it from getting any worse.  Then you need to remove the rust before treating it with primer to protect it from getting rusty again.  Hopefully these tips can be put into practice and you’ll end up with beautifully rust-free metal.

Most people own a car these days and if yours is starting to get a bit old you will more than likely see some rust appear.  This is perfectly normal however it's important that you set about getting rid of it ASAP in order to prevent the problem from getting any worse.  Removing a small area of rust is considerably easier than removing a large area.  Also, if you leave it so long the rust can get so bad there is little point in repairing it.  When it gets really bad you might just need to replace that particular part of the car.

In order to get rid of the rust you need to sand the affected area using sand paper.  Then you can use a wire brush or wire wool to get rid of any flaked areas of paint and debris.  You might feel that the affected area is too large to sand down by hand.  In which case a wire brush attachment for your electric drill will be better.  Bear in mind that the rust you see with your naked eye can simply be the tip of the iceberg meaning than when you chip away the surrounding paint you will notice the rust covers a larger area than you might have first thought.  So make sure you sand down the entire rusty area to guarantee a job well done.

Then you need to apply a primer such as Permtext Extend Rust Treatment or Mar-Hyde's One-Step Rust Converter Primer Sealer.  Apply a couple of coats of primer before you go onto the painting stage.  When you apply paint for your car make sure it matches the rest of your car.  You can buy paints specifically for different car colors so you don't have to worry about it not matching up. Benjamin Moore and Rust-Oleum both offer auto paints that prevent rust.

Remember, treating the rust early on will save you a lot of time, effort and money in the long-run.  There's no point in ignoring it because it will just get worse and worse.  If the rust is so thick that if you removed it all a hole would appear, then you need to replace that automotive body part.  There are also car rust repair kits on the market that contain all the equipment and instructions that you need to carry out the job professionally.
