Travel Insurance For 65 And Over

Written by April

We all love going on vacation but unfortunately it can end up being a lot more expensive than we anticipated.  So often we try to make cut backs and not bother with taking out travel insurance.  This might be particularly true for people who are over the age of 65 because the cost of taking out travel insurance suddenly jumps up.  However, if you are planning on taking a vacation without insurance then please think again.

In terms of travelling, you have the costs of hotels, flights, car hire and such like.  The problem is that if anything goes wrong (even if it isn’t your fault), trying to get a refund isn’t always very easy.  Any number of things can happen that are out of your control such as the flight getting cancelled or your hotel losing your reservation.  When these things happen it’s very difficult to get compensation from the companies.  So insurance is important whether you are under or over 65 years on age.

Unfortunately as we age, health problems and accidents are more likely to happen.  It might be heat stroke, a heart attack, or simply slipping on a wet bathroom floor.  Pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes and angina are more prevalent in the over 65 age bracket.  So when something does happen and you require medical assistance, you need to think about how much this would cost you if you didn’t have insurance.  It would certainly be a lot of money.

In the case of ill-health, your insurance company will pay for you to be taken to a hospital for treatment.  If you are somewhere remote, such as hill walking or on safari, then you might need to have a helicopter or aircraft sent for you.  These forms of transport don’t come cheap that’s for sure.

There’s also another issue that’s not very pleasant to talk about but that’s death.  Whether we like it or not, people who are over 65 have a much higher risk of dying.  If you were to die whilst on vacation, who would pay for your body to be transported back home?  This is particularly imperative if you are taking a vacation abroad.  Without insurance, having your family deal with this situation would be truly horrific.

Another big problem that people suffer whilst on vacation is theft.  Whether it’s someone mugging you or breaking into your hotel room, you can suffer a great deal of financial loss.  There are many criminals who specifically target tourists because often you are disorientated and too busy looking at the sights you don’t notice someone slipping their hand into your bag to steal your wallet or camera.  If you report the theft to the police and give them a list of everything that has been stolen, you’ll be able to claim your insurance when you get back home.

So if you are over 65 and feel that the cost of travel insurance isn’t worth it, please think again.  There are so many things that can happen whilst you are taking a vacation that the cost of the premium can end up being worth it for you.  There are a number of companies online who allow you to compare quotes very easily so you can get the best price.  Many tour operators will offer to sell you travel insurance as part of the deal, but often these are over priced, so make sure you check with as many companies as possible.

World Traveling and Toilet Stories

Written by Stephen

‘Toilet stories’, as the phrase sounds may not seem appetizing to many people. You may not at first give much of a thought to such stories if you are traveling to a land that is developed and is of first-class caliber. But if you believe in travelling all over the world with an idea of wider exploration, give due consideration to the idea of talking to a lot of people who have visited those destinations before you. I am sure they have a lot of hilarious and informative bathroom (mis)adventures to tell you.

If you are an American you will be most probably used to the "pedestal style" toilets.  Comfy and safe, these are a standard that most take completely for granted... until they find themselves without.

Also in countries like Europe, you will find the same pedestal style of toilets, but a little different.  The only significant thing that you will notice is the flushing system! Or apparent lack there of. Well, it’s always there, it’s just often very hard to find. It can be a dangling cord above you to a almost invisible button somewhere on the toilet.

In the underdeveloped countries you will most likely approach a toileting system that has porcelain footprints with a hole.  One squats over these like a catcher guarding home base. Veteran travellers often name the different kinds of toilets "Western style" and "Eastern Style" toilets.

Whether you opt for a western or eastern type of toilet, you will be required to keep a package of tissues in your pocket to avoid any sort of mishap that may occur because of any sort of defect of the flushing system. Don’t rely on the dispensers that you see near the washrooms either as they maybe empty and usually are!

In US it’s not much of big deal to find a toilet anywhere when compared to other countries. Even an ordinary fast food café at the end of the street will have a hygienic toilet system of its own. Capacious hotels offer up washrooms that are tucked into a corner of the lobby and be relied on for having tissue paper.  It does not matter whether you are customer there or not, they will still be graceful enough to offer up their valuable services to you.

There are many paid toilets in Europe, wherein you will have to pay 25 US cents to use. These paid toilets are named as "toilet booths".  You are supposed to carry a change along with you to pay in the times of need.  In fact some of the doors open only for you when you insert a coin in them. You cannot expect the people guarding these toilets to have a change with them. Though sometimes some peddler maybe generous enough to offer you some change of the same currency.

Also, prepare yourself to encounter women cleaners in the Men's washrooms and men cleaners in the Women's washroom.  There are a never ending stream of toilet stories that crop up from these few facts.  But then these stories should be also used to gain experience and to avoid any troublesome situation. You will have to come across all styles of toilets with different paying system.  Be ready for any sort of structure in the urgency situations.

How To Use ATM Machines When Traveling

Written by Stephen

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) have become very common in most parts of the world. In case you have plans to visit some countries abroad it is better to confirm if you can make use of the ATM machines in advance. This information may be available in the tourist information website or can be obtained from some other source. This would relieve you of the burden of changing your money in an airport or at banks when you travel which can be a real drag.

It is better to question your bank for these details as they can provide you with the best source of information. Generally ATMs abroad make use of four digit pin numbers and not alphabets. Make sure if your card works in that country and inform your bank about the place of your visit. This will prevent unexpected problems as some banks freeze your account in case of some unusual transaction. Though this is done for additional safety, it may put in unexpected trouble, so it is always better to inform your bank prior to travel.

Make use of your cards in the best way and take one more of your cards from a different bank in case of emergency. This will help you as you can make use of the second card in case the first one fails. An error in reading the card may cause sudden panic, so stay calm and try another ATM machine near you.  This will help you take your money, unless and otherwise something is wrong with your card.

These ATM machines used all over the world are almost the same and there may simple differences in the form of extra steps which require you to choose your language and so on. Following the steps prompted by the machine is going to make it easy on using the card abroad.

The money obtained from these ATM machines is going to be local currency and it is essential for you to be in knowledge of the conversion rates before withdrawing the amount of money you want. You can figure out the conversion rates from any standard convertor or you can even do it at your airport. At the arrivals hall in any airport there is always a bank and a cash machine. These banks let you know the conversion rates which you can check before withdrawing money.

ATMs abroad mostly provide a high denomination bill which is always going to make it difficult for you to pay the smaller amounts. So it is better for you to get change from the bank nearby or you can even ask your hotel to do it for you. Though they may not help you in changing your complete cash, they can do it for a note or two.

It is very important for you to bear in mind that your card has definite cash limit for a period of time which you cannot exceed and exceeding this will be charged on you. So instead of taking smaller amounts every time, ask the machine for the amount you need and if it refuses, it is better to look out for another ATM to save the fees. Make use of your Debit card rather than your credit card as the amount of fees charged on it is very high in case of some countries.

The safety of the money withdrawn is a far more important factor than finding ways to withdraw it. it is always better to put the money away into its right place as soon as it is withdrawn. Take enough care in choosing the ATM where you withdraw the money too as it very important to take the surroundings into consideration. Once you have put your money safely, your trip is going to be as exciting as it was planned.

Planning A Family Camping Trip

Written by Stephen

Why not go for camping in your vacation this year? If you live in some part of America and go on to ask your kids for a suggestion then the obvious answer would be somewhere like Disney world. And yes Disneyland is a great place to go and located on the coastal region of the United States, the fun at this place is guaranteed. The good thing is that there are a number of other places too in proximity of this area but things are going to be the same and its time you tried something different this time. Getting back to our discussion on camping, give a thought on which is the best place to go for a camp and what you can do there.

Such questions arise if you have never been camping before and so it is better to start off somewhere near your home. You aren’t going to miss out those longer trips and you can save them for some other day. Choose the nearest forest or park and try out your camping trip with your family. You may go on for a longer trip you are happy with this experience.

It is better to try out things far in advance before the trip, like setting up your tent and so on. Once you have done it once or twice in your house it is going to be easier for you during the trip. You can even ask your family members to try out these experiences in the atmosphere of your home and you shouldn’t be surprised if they are reluctant to it.

You must take enough care to plan the meals as well. Making eating outdoors simple and add fun to it. Let your kids make their own fires and roast marshmallows. Who knows? they may love it. This will also reduce a significant burden off your shoulders. You can look in for these dishes to get yourself interested too. Go for roasted hot dogs or barbeque burgers made in the campfire and include a couple of beers to with the meal. This will make the camping atmosphere perfect on its part.

You can also plan to take your coolers with you as it can store your snacks and soft drinks which your kids would love to gulp in between meals. Make sure that your kids are a part of the camp from the beginning. Let them set the tent and make their beds and cook their own food in the campfire. This would not only keep them interested but happy and adventurous as well.

Most importantly, make your camp seem as natural as it can be. Go for walks, try identifying flowers and birds, go for swimming and try exploring the area. Bathing in rivers can give a completely different experience to your kids who have been bathing in those bath tubs and swimming pools so long. All these activities can make a trip very exciting. Try being imaginative as you can and this would make it so much fun that your kids wouldn’t miss Disneyland.

Planning The Perfect Vacation Holiday

Written by Stephen

It is time to plan your trip. After deciding on the place of your vacation, you are now in knowledge of it and you can go on to have a great vacation at that place. Prepare for your trip. Are you in no idea of where you want to go? Then I have got interesting tips for you in case you are looking for nice places to visit. Even in case you know where you want to go, these tips can be very helpful. It is necessary for you to collect information about the place unless you know it well or visit it very frequently.

How to start planning for a trip? The first thing which you should consider is the number of days available to you and the amount of money you are ready to spend on the trip. After deciding on these two major factors consult with the people whom are going to travel with and get their suggestions. You will be getting a number of suggestions which you can make use of or go forward to do the thing which you always wanted to.

The dream place of your visit can be within your country or outside its borders. As we all know there is no limit for imagination and do not restrict yourself. Planning might work well for you and with proper planning you can surprise yourself that international travel is affordable too. In the present circumstances it is advisable to plan for an affordable trip in order to return home with good memories.

Television is the right choice to start your trip planning with. Recollect those places which you have always wanted to visit when you were watching the shows of your choice. You can also take a look into magazines on travel for a better idea and who knows this might very well land you in making a choice to an interesting place which you have never heard before.

You can also collect brochures about places and normal tours to those places. This will give you a rough idea about the amount time required at that place. If you are interested in visiting a beach then you can choose to visit one in a cheeky island rather than the ones you have always seen.

Contact the local travel agencies for they can help you with your travel. They also have a number of brochures and lot of information about the place of your choice. The whole trip planning can either be done by you or by an agent who can do things perfectly for you. But you have to bear in mind that such an agent would be of an additional cost and it is better to proceed on your own.

If you are interested in travel to a state within your country or abroad make use of the travel agency there as these agencies promote travel to their place and these travel agencies can be of great help. The information about these travel agencies can also be obtained from the internet.

Coming back to the discussion on budget, the questions to be answered is, are you going to have a budget trip or is it going to be lavish? Decide on the amount of money which you are going to spend and all the possible places which you are interested to visit. If your travel is going to be very expensive, you can drop it and take it for some other time. The research on travel is never going to be waste, and the day you are interested in traveling you have a well researched place at hand.

Winter Snow Camping

Written by Stephen

As the Winter snows begin to fall every year, people all over the world stop their routine camping excursions. However, they do not have to because even in the winter time camping can be a rewarding experience as long as you have the necessary tools to keep yourself warm and dry. Just imagine the clean pristine vistas, the crisp air that practically snaps in the morning, and the quiet serenity of a snow covered field. All of this can be enjoyed with Winter camping.

Winter snow camping requires the use of specialized gear which has been specifically designed for cold weather excursions. This gear includes things like tents, sleeping bags and of course clothing. As long as you are properly prepared for the weather, you can have a truly rewarding experience in choosing to camp when there is snow on the ground. Thermal underwear and insulated tents are a necessity. The key is to keep dry inside your clothing and inside your tent. With todays modern winter camping gear, it’s more than possible to enjoy a warm and toasty outdoor experience, even in the middle of Winter snows.

Imagine waking up in the morning and stepping outside of your tent and seeing for miles in any direction. As the snows fall the foliage is drastically reduced allowing you to see in almost every direction unimpeded. It is truly an amazing experience for anyone but if you are not properly prepared, winter snow camping can be a very dangerous event.

The most dangerous part is when you lay down to sleep at night time. As your body sleeps, certain parts shut down for the night and most people’s body temperature is reduced. Without a good sleeping bag that was designed for winter snow camping, you could suffer from frostbite, hypothermia or worse; death. It is all about being prepared and when you take the necessary precautions, you can make it through the nights and really enjoy waking up every single morning to the snow covered natural beauty which surrounds you in every direction and as far as the eyes can see.

So from now one, do not let the winter snows stop you from enjoying your love for camping in the great outdoors. Fight back by having the proper gear to handle winter snow camping and you will be able to enjoy the great outdoors year-round. And the best part is likely your favorite camp sites will be totally uncrowded! You will get to see the landscape like never before in all its Winter glory from the safety and security of your warm snow tent.

Choosing A Travel Guide...

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can always do your due diligence on any guide or tour company. Read reviews from previous customers, examine their history and how long they have been around. You can even ask around in some of the travel forums and travel blogs if a specific guide is recommended or not.

Call them and speak to them directly. Do they sound confident and like they have a good knowledge of the region? Are the kind to you as you ask them questions? Mention specific locations you would like to see and listen to whether they have good suggestions about them or not. You can learn a lot about a tour company just by chatting on the phone with them for a while.

Things to Do in Antigua - Barbuda

Written by janet

pink beach barbudaBarbuda lies 27 miles to the North of Antigua and is its lovely, quiet sister island famed for its pink sand beaches and colonies of Frigate Birds. You can get there from Antigua on the Barbuda Express, a catamaran service which operates seven days a week and takes just 90 minutes and you can visit for the day returning to Antigua in the afternoon. An alternative service uses the Excellence, a luxury class catamaran, or you could fly there from VC Bird Airport in St John's.

Barbuda is a flat island so if you are arriving by boat you won't see anything until you are almost there. The beaches are composed of tiny pink shells and the water is perfectly clear and sparkling blue. There is very little shade on the beaches however so take care and wear plenty of sun block and a hat!barbuda map

The Frigate Bird Sanctuary is well worth a visit, especially during the breeding season as the fluffy, white young are a wonderful sight sitting on their nests, in marked contrast to the darker adults. Adult females have a white underbelly but the males have a distinctive red pouch at the throat that is inflated to attract the females in the mating season. Females lay only one egg each year and the length of time that the parents care for the young is longer than any other bird. Tmale frigate bird in breeding seasonhe adults also have the largest wing span to weight of body ratio of any bird and consequently have difficulty walking. They spend most of their time in the air, only landing on cliffs and trees to roost or breed. Barbuda is also famous for its succulent lobsters and other wildlife includes tortoises, Fallow Deer, boar and the inevitable donkey!

Huge caves dot Barbuda especially at Two Foot Bay. Ancient cave drawings can be seen in one cave and Derby cave is famous for the Sink Hole, a vertical sided hole that is around 350ft in diameter. Lush vegetation grows in the cave, tall Palmetto Palms and lianas grow over the edge. Ferns grow in the damp earth and there are many birds. the tropical forest atmosphere in in marked contrast to the surrounding land which is very dry. There are also huge stalagmites that are formed by water dripping from the overhanging cliff. One is eight feet tall and at least two feet in diameter with a greenish white color.

If you would like to stay on Barbuda there are some wonderful hotels including Coco Point Lodge, located on a beautiful, pristine beach where you can enjoy windsurfing, deepsea fishing or waterskiing and North Beach which is a short boat ride from Codrington. North Beach has been described as 'mind numbingly beautiful' by a recent guest and is quiet and exclusive. However these wonderful hotels are not for the budget traveller!

There are also a few guest houses, mostly located in Codrington, such as the The Beach House, Palm Tree Guest House and Nedd's Guesthouse. Although not located on a beach they are reasonably priced and run by friendly Barbudans.

You can book a tour with the Barbuda Express to visit the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, the caves and enjoy a lobster lunch on the beach.
