If you're planning on engaging in any sort of travel, insurance is a must. Travel insurance covers many things, including missed connectons, lost luggage, theft, and other travel disasters. However, the most important aspect of a travel insurance policy is the medical coverage, as it can be very costly if you become sick or injured in a foreign country where your regular health insurance will not apply. You don't want to be financially ruined should anything unfortunate happen to you on your trip. If you're an adventure traveler, you need this insurance even more, given the higher risk activities you partake in with your travels.

A lot of people think it's expensive to get this kind of insurance, but it's really pretty cheep if you can tack it on to an existing service you have. For example I have insurance through my credit card which costs $22.30/year and I know you can get it through your existing car or home insurance companies too.

That is quite cheap, though I would advise you to read the fine print and make sure you're fully covered for all types of activities. I'll also admit to a bit of a US centric bias with this article, other places may have different insurance setups. There are also specific types of insurance for specific activities, such as DAN for divers. They'll cover the cost of many diving specific treatments that other insurance might not. Something to thing about.
